Carl Reese Attempting 24-Hour Guinness World Record on Motorcycle

Extreme endurance motorcycle rider to attempt 9th world record, "Greatest Distance on a Motorcycle in 24 Hours (Individual)" this weekend in Uvalde, Texas. Follow live at www.carlreese.net starting on February 24, 2017.

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA, February 23, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carl Reese, extreme endurance motorcycle rider and 8-time world record holder, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for "Greatest Distance on a Motorcycle in 24 Hours (Individual)." The current record is 2,023.5 miles, set by Matthew McKelvey in 2014.

The entire event, including practice laps as well as the 24-hour record attempt, starts on February 24, 2017, and will be live-streamed at www.carlreese.net. If successful, this will be Carl's ninth world record, so he has entitled the event "ProjectNINE."

Carl will make the Guinness record attempt riding a 1,649 cubic centimeter in-line 6-cylinder engine touring motorcycle, boasting 160 horsepower. The event will take place at a closed-circuit track in Uvalde, Texas. The track facility is used to test the long-term durability of a popular brand of tires, spans over 5,000 acres, and includes several different road and off-road test track configurations. Carl will be using the outer 8.5-mile oval track for his attempt. This track is 3 lanes wide, and is banked between one and seven degrees.

Carl's motorcycle is equipped with an extended range fuel tank because of the immense size of the track, and lack of nearby fuel stations. He will also be equipped with sophisticated electronic communication gear in order to maintain contact with his team throughout the event.

Because this is a 24-hour attempt, a significant portion of the ride will occur in the dark. The track facility lacks nighttime lighting, so Carl partnered with Glenn Stasky of Clearwater Lights in Rancho Cordova, CA to improve his visibility and illuminate the track ahead of him. Glenn and his team equipped Carl's motorcycle with two pairs of their very bright Sevina LED lights.

The choice to use Clearwater Lights was not a difficult one; each light produces a whopping 7,500 lumens, providing a total of 30,000 lumens beyond what the stock headlight provides. A custom-designed optic and advanced electronic circuitry projects the light a significant distance down the road. This will allow Carl to identify hazards on the track in enough time to avoid them.

The team made a reconnaissance trip in January to evaluate the track layout and to see what obstacles would have to be overcome. The following observations were made:

Given the tracks significant size and relative isolation, all supplies and equipment for this event will need to be brought in to the track transported by truck in shipping crates.

Guinness officials require at least two timing officials at all times. A sleep and timing schedule that allows for continuous operation will be arranged. A large RV camper will be brought in to serve as the command center for all timing and support personnel.

In order for the team to correctly calibrate the lights and coordinate the refueling process, a prerun will be made the day before the event.

There are no gas pumps at or near the track, so a 100-gallon gravity-fed fuel tank will be utilized for refueling. Members of the support team will use three five-gallon fuel containers to transfer fuel from the main tank to the motorcycle's seven-gallon stock and eight-gallon auxiliary fuel tanks.

Carl's team has developed a fueling sequence that will completely fill each tank at fuel stops without any overflow. Specially fabricated "quick fill" valves will be used to control flow and speed up fuel stops.

Approximately eight fuel stops will be needed, and nearly 90 gallons of fuel will be consumed during the event. The crew themselves will be fueled with gallons of coffee and dozens of donuts.

Carl hopes to go 2,400 miles in 24 hours, breaking the existing record by 376.5 miles. The event starts at 3:00 AM CSTon February 25, 2017, and will be live-streamed on his website www.carlreese.net - be sure to tune in and cheer Carl on!
