Dr. Peter Galbraith Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Mathematics Education

For more than five decades, Dr. Galbraith taught mathematics and mathematics education at secondary and higher education levels including four decades at university

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, March 08, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Peter Galbraith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Galbraith has excelled as a scholar at the higher education level. Now retired, he is an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland, an institution he joined in 1974. He is a past President of the International Community for the Teaching of Mathematical Modelling and Applications (ICTMA) and of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australia (MERGA), and a former Executive member of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI). He has also served on the Policy Committee of the System Dynamics Society, as a Vice-President of its Australasian Chapter, on the Education Committee of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), and on the Mathematical Sciences sub-committee of the Australian Academy of Science. At a state level, he served on a number of boards associated with Education, including as Chair of a State Assessment Panel for Mathematics. He is on the Editorial Board, or acts as a reviewer, for 15 academic and professional journals. Other roles held during Dr. Galbraith's career include lecturer in mathematics at the University of Melbourne, mathematics and science teacher for the Victorian Department of Education in Melbourne, and curriculum developer for mathematics, Victorian Department of Education. In addition to his research output, Dr Galbraith has authored, or co-authored more than twenty books containing learning and teaching material for senior school mathematics, where the recent emphasis continues to be in producing support material for the development of mathematical modelling. His research activities have included investigating factors involved in the integration of technology in mathematics courses at secondary and university level, collaborative learning practices, and his main interest - the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling as real world problem solving. In parallel with these interests he has undertaken modelling projects involving the use of system dynamics to address problems in complex systems - principally to do with management issues in education. In 2011 he was the recipient of a Career Research Medal from the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia, of which he is a life member. Research that is embodied in more than 200 publications has been enhanced through the receipt (in collaboration with colleagues) of grants from the Australian Research Council. Dr. Galbraith was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.

Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Galbraith prepared for his career by investing in his education. He attended the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1958, a Diploma in education in 1959 and a Master of Science in mathematics in 1972. In 1983, he achieved a Ph.D. from the University of Queensland for a thesis which employed System Dynamics to address a complex problem in the provision of tertiary education in Australia. He was later elected a fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (UK) with an associated chartered mathematician accreditation. As he looks to the future, Dr. Galbraith intends to continue enjoying retirement while taking on new projects and opportunities as they arise - including a new research project in 2017- 2019.
