Anneke Prins Simons Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Art Education

Dr. Simons is an accomplished artist who taught at New Jersey City University for 33 years



Throughout her career, she also pursued her own talent and passion for art

    JERSEY CITY, NJ, March 16, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Anneke Prins Simons has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Simons is a professor emeritus of New Jersey City University, where she taught art for 33 years. Throughout her career, she also pursued her own talent and passion for art; her work has appeared in one-woman shows at The Courtney Gallery at Jersey City State College, Stevens Institute of Technology, and the Jersey City Museum. It has also been displayed in group shows, juried shows and exhibitions throughout New Jersey and in New York City, including a print owned and exhibited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Further, Dr. Simons is noted for her work with the Genesis Project, a civic organization that she co-founded in 1986 to help the homeless.

Originally from Amsterdam, Holland, Dr. Simons was brought to the United States as a child at the outbreak of World War II. Much of her artwork is inspired by the experiences of her extended family and friends during the Holocaust. A driven scholar, Dr. Simons earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in 1952, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Radcliffe-Harvard University in 1953, and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1968. She later earned a Master of Arts in Social Sciences from Jersey City State College in 1975.

Dr. Simons studied art at the Yale-Norfolk Summer School of Art, Norfolk, Connecticut during the summer of 1952 on a Fellowship, at the Boston Museum School, Boston, Massachusetts, 1953-1956, and at the International School of Vision, Winter trimester 1956 in Sion, Switzerland and during the summer of 1957 in Salzburg, Austria, both times with Oskar Kokoschka. For many years she studied part-time at the National Academy in New York City. In 1975, with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, she attended the Summer Seminar on Chinese Art Histort for College Teachers at Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas.

Dr. Simons utilized her strong educational foundation throughout her career. She originated the adult Art Education program and taught at the South End House in Boston from 1953 to 1954, and then became an assistant teacher at the Boston Museum Children's Room. In 1961, she moved to Oakland, Calif., to become a teacher and art director at Twin Pines. Dr. Simons was a research assistant and began teaching Art Education while a graduate student at The Pennsylvania State University. She joined the faculty at New Jersey City University in 1967 and remained there until her retirement in 2000. While at the school, she served as senator-at-large from the Art Department and as a member of the personnel committee, and also directed an art program for gifted high school students. Dr. Simons contributed a number of articles to professional journals as well.

In recognition to her various efforts over the years, Dr. Simons received several awards for art, academic achievements and civic work. These include a Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award from New Jersey City University in 1999. Dr. Simons' accomplishments have been featured in the 59th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America and the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education. She has also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
