DIX HILLS, NY, March 22, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ms. Daphine Holmes Somerville has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After accruing nearly four decades of professional experience in elementary education, Ms. Somerville retired from the field to pursue other, related avenues. She started her career in 1961 as a teacher for East Islip School District, and after retiring in 1999, she obtained various positions with the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) and Dowling College. She left her work with OIC in 2013 to give more time to her aging mother, who is now 102 years old, and a newly born grandson. Subsequently, she left Dowling in 2014.

An alumna of Blackburn College, Hofstra University, Columbia University and Farmingdale College, Ms. Somerville holds an Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science in education, and completed post-graduate studies. Her professional affiliations include the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), New York State United Teachers, and the East Islip Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Somerville's background led her to pen the "Beaman Family Reunion Journal" and jointly co-author the "Baptist Training Union Study Guide." She is also credited with founding and co-authoring a tutoring program called "Adopt-A-School child/Family" in 1990. She is also a founding member of the Islip Branch of the NAACP (1958), the National Dr. Martin L. King Junior Memorial in Washington, DC (2005), and a charter member of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Notably, Ms. Somerville has been recognized for her professional accomplishments with a wide variety of accolades, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Long Island Region of NAACP, Appreciation of Service Award from Partners in Education of First Baptist Church of Bay Shore, Award for Promoting Education of Children and Adults in the Community from the Suffolk Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), and an Editor's Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry. Ms. Somerville has been featured in three editions of Who's Who in American Education, and eight volumes of Who's Who of American Women.
