Martin B.J. Deutsch Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Travel Journalism

Mr. Deutsch has been actively involved in the publishing field for six decades

NEW YORK, NY, March 23, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Martin Bernard Joseph Deutsch has been included in five editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, the inaugural edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication, eleven editions of Who's Who in the East, twenty editions of Who's Who in America, and nine editions of Who's Who in the World. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by more than 60 years of experience in the field of publishing, Deutsch served as a consultant for Travel Industry Shows (Cruise Tour World) from 2002 to 2010 and the Home Based Travel Show from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, since 2002 he has been the co-owner of and a columnist for Joesentme.com, a unique repository of content related specifically to business travel, with a focus on the needs of American business travelers.

From December of 1955 until October of 1958 Deutsch was an associate editor of a monthly trade magazine called Caribbean-Latin American Travel Courier, which in October of 1958, became Travel Weekly, of which Deutsch was the founding managing editor, a role he held until April of 1967. At that time, he joined Official Airline Guides (OAG) Travel Magazines, a subsidiary of Dunn & Bradstreet, as founding managing editor. In September of 1967, Deutsch launched TravelAge East (out of New York), focused on the regional travel agency sales force in that market. In March of 1969, he introduced TravelAge West (San Francisco), and in 1974, he began publishing TravelAge MidAmerica (Chicago). During this time period, he also introduced a subscription only travel management daily, and the twice-weekly travel management newsletter. Also during this time frame, he launched the regional TravelAge trade shows, which began as regional adjuncts to the TravelAge weeklies. These shows were later offered on a national basis. Within a few years there were a total of nine TravelAge trade shows a year.

During these 25 years, Deutsch also produced and hosted a daily one hour television show entitled "The World of Travel" at four annual travel industry conventions. He also often wrote a daily front page column for the major daily newspaper in whichever cities these conventions took place. For example, in Tokyo, he wrote a daily column for 5 days starting on page one of the local English language newspaper. Over the same time period, without interrupting the daily flow of Travel Management daily back home, he also launched special convention editions of Travel Management Daily at as many as 17 industry venues a year. As paid subscription newsletters, tmd and tmn carried no advertising; but the convention editions did, as did The World of Travel television. Everything above falls into the category of trade publishing, but in September of 1981, Deutsch also moved into consumer publishing with OAG Frequent Flyer Magazine which was distributed with various editions of the OAG Pocket Flight Guide. Over the years, circulation would go as high as 375,000 and, by 1985, Frequent Flyer was named as one of the most successful new consumer publications in the market by Folio Magazine, a leader in the consumer publishing category. Deutsch would leave the OAG Publications Group in June of 1994, and six months later joined Travel Agent magazine as a consultant in both editorial and advertising. In 2002, he left the magazine business and went into trade show consulting.

Deutsch gave a series of lectures as a guest instructor at the University of Massachusetts, and served as a speaker to the travel and transportation industry as well as a speaker at major travel conventions.

Deutsch served on the Upper Manhattan Community Planning Board (1965-1966), the US Travel Service (a subsidiary of the United States Department of Commerce) under President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) and as a delegate to the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism (1995) under President Bill Clinton. He also served as an officer of the board of the Center for International Humanitarian Cooperation for nearly two decades.

A recipient of various awards for travel journalism, Deutsch graduated from The Bronx High School of Science and the City College of New York. He also earned graduate credits in English literature at Columbia University. While at CCNY, he was twice editor and chief (the first time as a lower sophomore) of the college weekly, Observation Post. In recognition of this accomplishment, The New York Times featured Deutsch for being the first lower sophomore to hold that post. He was also the CCNY correspondent for The Gray Lady (The New York Times) from 1951-1953. In the summers of 1952 and 1953, he was a managing editor of The Beachcomber on Long Beach Island, NJ, a seasonal summer resort weekly. As well, he was the only regular panelist on the Saturday night radio show Campus Press Conference on WNYC with Gabe Pressman for more than 2 years. Deutsch was inducted into the US Army in September of 1953, eventually became editor of Reveille, the weekly newspaper at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Deutsch also worked for more than a year as a reporter for the Southwest American, a major regional daily based in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Deutsch, who visited and reported from over 100 countries over the course of his career, now enjoys writing a column for joesentme.com from his study in New York City.
