Frank J. Sonleitner, Ph.D., Honored for Excellence in Zoology Education

Dr. Frank Sonleitner is noted for his expertise and research in population ecology, ecogenetics and entomology



    NORMAN, OK, March 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frank J. Sonleitner, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Sonleitner spent 33 years at the University of Oklahoma before retiring as an associate professor emeritus of zoology in 2002. He initially joined the school's biology faculty in 1965 as an assistant professor of zoology. After four years, he advanced to associate professor. During his time at the school, Dr. Sonleitner became most noted for his expertise in population ecology, ecogenetics and entomology. He has had a number of research papers published on these and other topics.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Sonleitner earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1951, a Bachelor of Science in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1959. He then completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship with the National Science Foundation in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Sonleitner was inspired to teach zoology thanks to his childhood interest in animals. After spending a year lecturing in zoology at the University of California, Berkeley, he relocated to Kansas in 1962 to become an assistant professor of entomology at the University of Kansas. He remained at the school until he joined the University of Oklahoma in 1965. He retired in 2002.

Aside from his teaching positions, Dr. Sonleitner serves on the board of directors of Oklahomans for Excellence in Science Education (OESE). He served for 19 years on the board of directors of the National Center for Science Education. His further professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Ecological Society of America, the Oklahoma Academy of Science, and Phi Beta Kappa. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he received an Army research grant from the Office of the Surgeon General in 1963.
Dr. Sonleitner's achievements were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 6th through 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 9th and 10th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
