Dr. Delvin S. Fanning Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Professional Achievements in the Sciences

Dr. Fanning devoted more than three decades to the University of Maryland, College Park as an assistant, associate and full professor



    RIVERDALE, MD, April 27, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Delvin Seymour Fanning has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With more than six decades of amassed knowledge in the field of soil science, Dr. Fanning lends his talents to the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has served as emeritus professor since 1999. His career beginnings were modest -- he got his start as a soil scientist for the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and later served as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Soils at the University of Wisconsin. His career gave way to various high-profile professorial positions over a 50+ year period in the Departments of Agronomy, Natural Resource Sciences and Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Science and Technology for the University of Maryland, College Park.

Dr. Fanning attended Cornell University and achieved both a Bachelor and Master of Science. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America. Throughout his career, Dr. Fanning has contributed his knowledge to works, such as "Soil: Morphology, Genesis, and Classification," which was co-authored with M.C.B. Fanning in 1989, as well as numerous articles in professional journals, books and encyclopedias. He also helped to define, describe and coin names for processes for sulfide mineral accumulation in soils sulfidization and sulfide mineral oxidation to form sulfuric acid, as well as the reaction of sulfuric acid with soils to form new minerals sulfuricization. For his professional achievements, Dr. Fanning has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Dr. Fanning, in July 2016, was the recipient of the Pons Medal of the International Union of Soil Science at the 8th International Acid Sulfate Soils Conference that he helped to host at the University of Maryland for outstanding contribution to acid sulfate soil science and practice.
