Early on in his career, Dr. Sobieski acted as an assistant and adjunct professor at the Warsaw University of Technology. Later, he worked with the university, as well as Polish Aircraft Industries, in the role of consultant. He also worked as a research associate at the Technical University of Norway and an associate professor at St. Louis University. On the staff of the NASA Langley Research Center, Dr. Sobieski has served in a number of varying roles over the course of more than 36 years, including aerospace engineer, head of the research office, chief scientist, multidisciplinary research coordinator, manager of the computational aerosciences team and senior research scientist.
Dr. Sobieski's educational background has served him well throughout his career. He holds a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, as well as a Master of Science in the same discipline and a Doctor of Engineering in technical sciences. A certified chartered engineer through the Royal Aeronautical Society, Dr. Sobieski was a member of the faculty of George Washington University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the National Institute for Aerospace. Throughout his lengthy and notable career, he has authored and co-authored over 200 technical publications under the pen name Sobieszczanski-Sobieski and conducted research and problem solving initiatives for aeronautics, space flight, and high performance computing. He has also parlayed his vast knowledge into works such as "Multidisciplinary Design Optimization," which he co-authored in 2015, and lectures at major research and academic institutions and conferences worldwide.
A Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) he was among the founders of the International Society of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO), Dr. Sobieski has earned many awards for professional excellence. From NASA he received medals for Exceptional Engineering Achievement in 1988, and for Exceptional Service in 2005. In 1986, he won the National Award for Multidisciplinary Design Optimization from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Wright Brothers Medal from the Society of Automotive Engineers in 2005. Additionally, he has had the honor of being featured in Who's Who in the World (2015) Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
