Dr. Leonard Porcello Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Engineering



He served as a Co-Investigator for the Apollo Lunar Sounder Experiment flown on Apollo 17, applying imaging radar techniques to the mapping of sub-surface lunar geologic features.

    YORBA LINDA, CA, May 03, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Porcello dedicated the first 21 years of his career to the University of Michigan, where he held roles as Associate Professor, Professor and Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering, as well as research responsibilities within the University's Willow Run Laboratories, and also at The Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM). He then served for 36 years as a research manager and executive with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), before retiring in 2012.

Backed by six decades of professional experience, Dr. Porcello is a highly regarded engineering research and development executive whose expertise has impacted laboratories across the country. At the start of his career, in 1955, he joined the staff of the University of Michigan's Willow Run Laboratories, with which he remained affiliated through 1972. This included four years as Head of the Radar and Optics Laboratory, and two years as Associate Director of the Willow Run Laboratories. He also served as an Associate Professor, Professor, and subsequently Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering during the time frame 1969 through 1976. From 1973 to 1976, he served as Director of the Radar and Optics Division of the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM), and as a Vice President of ERIM. During this period, he also served as a Co-Investigator for the Apollo Lunar Sounder Experiment flown on Apollo 17, applying imaging radar techniques to the mapping of sub-surface lunar geologic features.

He then dedicated the next 26 years of his career (1976 - 2012) to various engineering executive roles with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), from which he retired. He managed the activities of various engineering organizations with SAIC during this period, and served as a Senior Vice President of SAIC from 1986 through 2012.

Dr. Porcello's impact on his industry stretches beyond his work in the laboratory. While establishing his reputation of excellence within his field, he was also taking opportunities to further propel himself forward. Driven by his interest in the science behind how things work, he first prepared for his career by pursuing and completing his education. Dr. Porcello holds a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Cornell University, and three degrees from the University of Michigan, including a Master of Science in physics, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. He has remained at the top of his field through his memberships with IEEE, the Optical Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, and Eta Kappa Nu. He has also continued to be engaged in various consulting and board membership activities, including charitable initiatives. As he looks to the future, he continues to engage in select projects and opportunities of interest as they arise.
