Dr. Miguel Adriao Mateus dos Reis Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Accomplished Physics Research

Dr. Reis performs physics research at the University of Lisbon after the government office where he works for since the late 1980s, was merged to this University

Dr. Miguel AdriĆ£o Mateus dos Reis works in the 2.5MV Van de Graaff accelerator and more recently in the 3MV tandetron accelerator.

BOBADELA, PORTUGAL, June 22, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Miguel Adriao Mateus dos Reis has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Miguel Adriao Mateus dos Reis works in the 2.5MV Van de Graaff accelerator and more recently in the 3MV tandetron accelerator. The ITN accelerator team is highly recognized, ranking in or close to the top 10 low energy accelerator groups in Europe in the first decade of the 21st century. Until 2009, he was mostly involved in environmental applications of NATs (Nuclear Analytical Techniques) and identified a dangerous potential connection between atmospheric chlorine in PM2.5 (sea salt spray occurs in PM10 but not in PM2.5) and diabetes in 2009 (Reis et al Science of the Total Environment 407 (2009) 5726-5734).

Safety is a paramount concern for Dr. Reis; after all, he was born in Lisbon, not too far away, and matriculated there at the University of Lisbon, earning a degree in technological physics. He earned a Master of Science in physics there in 1993, and became a research assistant at ITN in 1994. Dr. Reis furthered his education at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, earning a Ph.D. in 2001, whereupon he became a full-fledged researcher with ITN. The institution performs safety courses and other services for Portugal, including the role of advisory entity on nuclear security. Since 2012, Dr. Reis has been working at the University of Lisbon.

Dr. Reis has written "Biomonitoring and Assessment of Atmospheric Trace Elements in Portugal," and has served as president of the Portuguese National Committee for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme from 2005 to 2008. At ITN, after completing his PhD in Delft, in which he introduced the concept of "environmental stress events memory" as applicable to all biosphere, based on results for lichens, he managed to install in 2008 the first ever Energy Dispersive High Resolution PIXE system based on a commercial X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer (XMS), a major breakthrough in the field. This major breakthrough may help to reach conclusions on the existence or not of a cause effect relation underneath the evidence for statistical correlation between airborne chlorine and diabetes.

Dr. Reis considers his research in the field one of his great achievements, and has been selected for inclusion in three volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, as well as Who's Who in the World for 2009. He has two children.
