Dr. Mohanty has been a professor of finance for 22 years, a career begun after moving to the U.S. from India. He is the current chair of the department of finance at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. He is a featured author in numerous financial and economics journals. Dr. Mohanty's expertise is in the asymmetric impact of oil price shocks on stock prices, as well as corporate investment, capital structure, emerging capital markets, bank risk, and regulations, the Dodd-Frank Act, capital adequacy and the Basel III.

Born in Cuttack, in the state of Orissa, India to Biswanath and Khyana Prava Mohanty, Dr. Mohanty arrived in the U.S. in 1985 to study at Minnesota State University. He had already held a bachelor's degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India, and was working as an assistant engineer in Engineers India Limited in New Delhi. In 1986, Dr. Mohanty found a position as a business consultant with the Small Business Development Center in Mankato, Minnesota, and in 1989, he earned an MBA from Minnesota State.

Dr. Mohanty stayed on as an instructor in the department of marketing at Minnesota State University for one and half years before going on to pursue a doctoral degree in finance. He joined Hofstra University in New York as a visiting Assistant Professor in 1994. He received the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Cleveland State University in 1995 and in the same year, he accepted a position as an assistant professor of finance at Hofstra University where he worked until the spring of 2001. In the fall of 2001, he joined University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in the fall of 2004, and later to full professor in the fall of 2012. In the fall of 2014, Dr. Mohanty accepted a position as a tenured full professor, and the Chair of the Finance Department in the Koppelman School of Business at Brooklyn College.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Mohanty has served with the editorial board of the Academy of Financial Studies, the Academy of Commercial Banking and Finance, the Journal of Commodity Markets, the Journal of International Financial Markets Institutions, and Money, and Managerial Finance. Dr. Mohanty has contributed to articles in numerous professional journals including the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Economic Review, Journal of Business, Journal of International Money and Finance, and Journal of Financial Research, Financial Review, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, among others. His work has been recognized with a 2007 Fulbright Senior Specialists grant to visit the Xavier Institute of Management in India, a 2008 Visiting Research Scholarship to visit the department of finance at Budapest University of Technology, and a 2011 University Scholars Grant in recognition of research at the University of St. Thomas.

Dr. Mohanty was honored with a 2002 Outstanding Research Award from the Academy of Accounting and Financial Studies and the 1997 ANBAR Citation of Highest Quality Rating. Dr. Mohanty is a member of Allied Academies Inc, which awarded him their 2002 Outstanding Research Award. He is affiliated with the Financial Management Association International, the Eastern Financial Association, the American Financial Association, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi. For achievements in the field of financial education, Dr. Mohanty was selected for inclusion in four volumes of Who's Who in America from 2004 to 2007, three volumes of Who's Who in American Education from 2004 to 2008, and the 2005 volume of Who's Who in the World.
