John Gerrard Fewel Recognized By Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Research Administration

Mr. Fewel celebrates a successful career performing and managing medical research with U.S. Veterans Affairs



    DUNCANVILLE, TX, July 10, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Gerrard Fewel has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Fewel retired in 2003 following 36 years of administrating medical research, primarily working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In doing so, he has successfully overcome the dual challenges that accompany major medical institutions and government agencies, including managing compliance, fiscal matters, procurement, human resources, grants, contracts, laboratory safety, human and animal studies, engineering projects, inventory, and the production of material for scientific journals. Additionally, Mr. Fewel has served as president and chair of the Miracle Wish Foundation since 2006, providing the seriously and terminally ill with pro-bono healing services throughout America and the United Kingdom.

Born in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Kenneth Jack and Cleo Brees Fewel, Mr. Fewel began his storied career after graduating with a microbiology major and chemistry minor at the University of Texas at Austin. As a research assistant with the University of Kentucky Medical Center and a research associate with the New Jersey College of Medicine, he developed analytical techniques for measuring metabolites in tissue biopsies in order to determine tissue damage during hemorrhagic and endo-toxin shock. In 1975, he became director of the cardiothoracic research lab at the VA Medical Center in San Antonio. He applied his analytical techniques to determine the most efficacious protocol for prevention of tissue and blood cell damage during cardio pulmonary bypass. Mr. Fewel co-authored 32 medical research manuscripts published in peer reviewed medical journals during his career. He later earned a Master's degree in Management in 1980 from the University of Texas at San Antonio and went on in 1982 to the VA Medical Center in Memphis as an administrative officer trainee.

Mr. Fewel continued to administer research programs with the VA Medical Centers in Boston and Dallas, becoming administrative officer of research for the VA Medical Center in Dallas from 1984 to 2003. Concurrently, he accepted the position of executive director of the Dallas VA Research Corporation from 1990 to 2002, and coordinated research for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 1984 to 1990. Mr. Fewel served as President of the Society of Research Administrators, government division, 1997-1998. In 1993, Mr. Fewel was presented with an honorary diploma from Boston College.

For his services to his foundation and to veteran health and medical research, Mr. Fewel has received 2006 and 2008 Congressional Medals of Distinction, as well as a 2008 Presidential Commission. He was named 2006 Republican of the Year and 2006 Businessman of the Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee, in addition to a 2006 National Leadership Award. Mr. Fewel is the recipient of a 1989 Public Service Award, and was included in the 2008 to 2009 Cambridge Blue Book, as well as the 34th Edition of the Dictionary of International Biography published by the Biographical Centre of Cambridge, Cambridge, England and the 2007 to 2008 edition of "Great Minds of the 21st Century" published by the American Biographical Institute. Mr. Fewel was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare from 2009 to 2012.

In his spare time, Mr. Fewel enjoys sailing, creative writing and touring in his professionally restored 1946 MG TC. Furthermore, Mr. Fewel is the author of the autobiography Pursuing The Wings of Pegasus, the extraordinary journey of a natural healer which was released by Xlibris LLC in 2009. Mr. Fewel married Vicki Ann Huber, RN in 2000. He has two children: Jeffrey, a University of Texas at Dallas alumnus and Department of the Treasury employee and Sean, a Boston College graduate, who pursues a career in New York City as a contractor.
