Mr. Mitchell is a respected attorney in the Washington, D.C. area with over 50 years in construction law and commercial arbitration. He is admitted to the bar in three states; Ohio, Virginia and Washington D.C., the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Supreme Court and now serves as a skilled mediator, arbitrator and neutral with the dispute resolution organization JAMS. Mr. Mitchell also serves as the Chairman of the Center for Management Development and Training, Inc., and has substantial experience as a leader in the financial sector.

Born to Malcolm Douglas and Ruth Holland Mitchell, Mr. Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science at Cornell University and matriculated at the George Washington University in Washington. He earned a JD with honors in 1959, and two years later accepted a post with the firm of Hudson & Creyke as an attorney. In 1967, he founded the law firm of Lewis, Mitchell & Moore in Vienna, Virginia. In the '80s and early '90s, Mr. Mitchell made his venture into finance as vice chair of Ameribanc Savings Bank in Annandale, Virginia, and was a trustee of the Ameribanc Investors Group.

Mr. Mitchell returned to Washington with Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius LLP in 1987. He served as an attorney there for 12 years before joining Hill International Inc. as president and corporate executive officer of the construction claims group. Mr. Mitchell has co-authored a book on the topic titled "Handbook of Construction Law and Claims," and contributed numerous articles to professional journals, such as "Must Arbitrators Follow the Law?" and "Cultural Sensitivities in International Construction Arbitration," both in 2014 from JAMS Global Construction Solutions. Mr. Mitchell left Hill International in 2004 to focus on The Center for Management Development and Training. In 2009, he joined JAMS, The Resolution Experts, a worldwide network of highly respected and experienced arbitrators from diverse backgrounds and international partnerships.

Over the course of a fruitful career, Mr. Mitchell has served with many prestigious legal groups. He is a Fellow and former National Chairman of the Public Contract Law Section of the American Bar Association, a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in the U.K., a member of the International Bar Association North American Regional Forum, a member of the London Court of International Arbitration North American Users Council, former faculty member of the Stanford and Texas A&M Universities Construction Executives Programs, a Director of the Procurement Round Table and a recipient of the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law lifetime achievement Cornerstone Award. He has handled cases in 35 countries, primarily in Asia and the Middle East, under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), American Arbitration Association (AAA), and the Saudi Arabian and Taiwan arbitration rules.

Mr. Mitchell has a B.S. from Cornell University College of Industrial and Labor Relations, and a J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University Law School. He enjoys boating, and has three children. Per Mr. Mitchell's wishes, this Lifetime Achievement Award is dedicated to his late wife, Nancy Elizabeth Bishop.
