PROVIDENCE, RI, July 14, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Harl Edgar Ryder a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Ryder celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Ryder served for 40 years as a distinguished professor of economics at Brown University, educating generations of students in the study of how individuals, businesses and governments manage resources to attain their goals. His collaborative work is often referenced as an example of a "neoclassical" interpretation of economic factors like fertility, life expectancy, and the way capital is allocated.

Dr. Ryder entered academia at the age of twenty, initially earning an associate's degree at Mount Vernon Community College. He quickly gained traction, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science at the University of Illinois. In 1965, he accepted a post as assistant professor of economics at Brown University, and served there while working on a PhD at Stanford University. He received the degree in 1967, and was made chairman of the department of economics in 1974, continuing to serve Brown University until 2005 when he accepted the venerable position of professor emeritus.

Over a long career, Dr. Ryder contributed to the growing mainstream of neoclassical economics, which posits that the value of an item is not dependent on the costs required to make it, but the usefulness the item has to the end consumer. In "Mortality Decline, Human Capital Investment and Economic Growth," Dr. Ryder's team proposes that as each generation of people enter the economy, they create overlapping expectations in response to how much education they have, what kinds of resources are available, and how long they expect to live, which impacts how they will spend in the economy. They write: "mortality decline produces economically significant increases in schooling and consumption. Allowing schooling to vary endogenously produces a much larger response of consumption and capital to mortality decline than is observed when schooling is held fixed." These factors were further developed into formulas that form the basis of "neoclassical synthesis," an accepted consensus among economists today.

Illinois' Mt. Vernon Township High School and the Rend Lake Community College both list Dr. Ryder as a Notable Alumnus. Furthermore, he serves as treasurer for the Beneficent Congregational Church and the Dodeka Literary Group. For his services to modern economics, Dr. Ryder was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In his spare time, Dr. Ryder delves into genealogy. He has three children.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Ryder has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
