Better living through chemistry has been the clarion call for biotechnology, and Dr. Bak has devoted his research toward solving the energy needs of the 21st century. In the early 2000s, he produced research on ethanol production utilizing lignocellulose materials, which are some of the most abundant resources on Earth. Dr. Bak's work transforms industrial byproduct materials like rice straw, corn stover, and sugarcane bagasse into fuel. Since 2009, Dr. Bak has been in demand by scientific groups across a spectrum of disciplines, including the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Energy Bioscience Institute at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Bak first studied at Yonsei University, earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry, before focusing on a Ph.D. in food biotechnology from Korea University. From 2007 to 2011, he worked at Korea University as a researcher in the Institute of Life Science and Natural Resources, and as a research professor in the College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology. There he worked on the initial research into biofuel production, authoring papers on various methods of pre-treating lignocellulose to produce bioethanol, including electron beams, breakdown of biomass by Dichomitus squalens, and fermentation. Dr. Bak's patents in this research are pending in the field. During this period, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Center of Agricultural Biomaterials at Seoul National University, and went to UC Berkeley as a visiting researcher in the plant and microbial biology department.

From 2012 to 2013, Dr. Bak became a research assistant professor with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as well as research leader in the Advanced Biomass Research and Development Center, both at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). KAIST was established in 1971 with the help of American interests, and offers diverse international opportunities. During this time, Dr. Bak was able to branch out as a dispatch researcher for the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. In 2005 and 2008, Dr. Bak was a researcher with the BioGreen 21 program under the control of the RDA. In 2010, he served as professor in charge in the division of food bioscience and technology in the physical chemistry department of Korea University. From 2013 to 2014, Dr. Bak became a senior researcher in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the Institute of Advanced Machines and Design at Seoul National University. Currently, Dr. Bak serves as a researcher, principal researcher, and vice-president of the "Hwa-seong (and also "Nam-yang" and "Cheong-gang") brewery/distillery for Korean traditional wines.

In 2015, Dr. Bak's volume of editorial and publication work exploded, coinciding with postdoctoral research at the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He is an editor for the Journal of Mechanical and Automation Engineering and the Aperito Journal of Cellular and Molecular Biology. He has contributed to Frontiers in Bioscience, the Austin Journal of Chemical Engineering, and the Journal of Coastal Life Medicine, amongst numerous other journals. Notably, he has also contributed to the African Journal of Biotechnology and the African Journal of Agricultural Research.

Over the course of his professional journey, Dr. Bak has served his civic duty as a second lieutenant in the Army Infantry School, 17th Infantry Division of the Republic of Korea Army. He was decorated with a commendation certification for his effort. Dr. Bak has also served with the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. He is a committee member for the Advanced Biomass Research and Development Center in the ministry of education at Daejeon, and a member of the Society of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, the Korean Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, The Science Advisory Board, the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology, KSBB, KMB, the Korea Reserve Officers' Training Corps, National Human Services Assembly, and Mensa Korea as a non-executive board member in 2009 and 2010. He also serves as executive director and delegate of KUAA and was appointed Secretary-General of the UCC in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2016. Last year, he also participated in an advanced open peer review system of SCIENCEDOMAIN international (www.sciencedomain.org), was appointed advisor to the Director General of IBC, and most recently, was appointed as a committee member for judging/evaluating Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology research projects.

He received the 2009 New Scientist Award from the Korean Society of Microbiology and Biotechnology. In 2009-2011 and 2014-2016, he was nominated for the B&B Daniel I.C. Wang Award in Biotechnology and Bioengineering, and in 2015, he was nominated for the 15th Annual Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences by John Wiley & Sons. He was also nominated to serve as an editorial board member of the American Journal of Bioengineering and Biotechnology, reviewer for the Journal of Applied Biotechnology, and editorial board member of Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences journal. This year, Dr. Bak was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Education by the World Congress of Arts, Sciences and Communications.

Dr. Bak was included in the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the World for achievements in biotechnology. He enjoys swimming, the game of go, music, movies, and tae kwon do.
