Nancy Rivard Shaw Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Shaw has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the art history

She is a scholar and art historian who worked for many years as a curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts and as an adjunct professor in the Humanities Department at Wayne State University.

Ms. Shaw is an independent scholar and art historian who worked for many years as a curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts and as an adjunct professor in the Humanities Department at nearby Wayne State University. She is well known as an expert in American paintings by artists born in the 1800s, and has contributed to publications collecting hundreds of pieces and detailed accounts of artists' information. In 1998, Ms. Shaw retired from the DIA and accepted the venerable position of curator emeritus. A frequent lecturer in the field she currently offers her expertise as a specialist in late 19th and early 20th century American art.

Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Ms. Shaw is a native of the Midwest and attended Oakland University to receive a BA magna cum laude in 1969. In 1972 she accepted a position as an assistant curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She earned an MA from Wayne State University in 1973, and was appointed Curator of American Art in 1975, one of the first women to be so named.

In 1983 Shaw initiated a project to publish the collection in a three volume series and developed the funding to support it. She authored the Introduction to American Paintings in the Detroit Institute of Arts, Vol. I (1990), and Vol. II (1997), and contributed essays to Vol. III (2005). Among the major exhibitions she has contributed to are "John Singer Sargent and the Edwardian Age," (1979); "The Quest for Unity: American Art Between World's Fairs," (1983); and "American Art from the Manoogian Collection," (1989). In 1997 she organized a Japanese tour of "From the Hudson River School to Impressionism: American Paintings from the Manoogian Collection," and prepared the scholarly catalogue that accompanied it. Recent publications include contributions to Calm in the Shadow of the Palmetto & Magnolia: Southern Art from the Charleston Renaissance Gallery (2003); and Spot: Southern Works on Paper (2008).

Ms. Shaw is a member of the Wayne State University Alumni Association. For her efforts as an art historian, she was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and the 2004 to 2005 edition of Who's Who in American Education. She is also an artist, and enjoys painting.
