ALBION, MI, August 25, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name James L. Curtis, MD, a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Curtis celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Retired psychiatrist and clinical professor emeritus at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons since 2000, Dr. Curtis initially considered studying law, but once World War II had begun, he had realized that he would be better served in the medical field so that he could instead help save lives in some way. Shortly after completing his Bachelor's degree at Albion College, Dr. Curtis was drafted during World War II but was made a member of the Army Specialist Training program while continuing his medical studies at the University of Michigan Medical School from which he received the MD degree. The war having ended he completed two years of postgraduate training at the Wayne County General Hospital in Eloise, Michigan, before transferring to New York City to complete his psychiatric residency training at the State University of New York (Downstate) and a research fellowship at the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Clinic for Training and Research associated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Manhattan. He was returned to military service and served for two years as Captain in the United States Air Force as Chief of Psychiatry at the Mitchel Air Force Base on Long island.

Upon exiting the military, Dr. Curtis became an instructor at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, then as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry. Enjoying the many rewards that the field of education had to offer, he continued teaching for the remainder of his career. On leaving State University Downstate he accepted an appointment to the faculty of the Cornell University Medical College as Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for twelve years then as a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York Medical College. Spending time as a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York Medical College for a short time before accepting a similar position at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he spent the next 18 years in his role until retiring in 2000. He also simultaneously worked as the director for the department of psychiatry at Harlem Hospital Center in N.Y.C.

The first doctor in his family, Dr. Curtis had relied on various mentors throughout his career and in life, such as Martin Luther King and W.E.B. DuBois, a champion of civil rights. Early in his career, Dr. Curtis authored his first book, "Blacks, Medical Schools and Society," followed by "Affirmative Action in Medicine" in 2003. His third book, "Memoirs of a Black Psychiatrist: A Life of Advocacy for Social Change," will be released in the coming weeks and will be available on Amazon.com.

A diplomate by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Psychiatry, Dr. Curtis is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Orthopsychiatric Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the American Academy of Psychoanalysts. Accepted into a number of Who's Who editions, these include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he has been married to his wife Vivian Alzine Rawls since 1948. They share two sons.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, James L. Curtis has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
