Dr. Lawrence William Jones Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Lawrence W. Jones has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of physics

ANN ARBOR, MI, August 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Dr. Lawrence William Jones a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Jones celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Jones has accrued more than 65 years' experience in the fields of science and education. Currently he holds the title of professor emeritus with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and remains professionally active through his involvement with a variety of international meetings, such as the International Conference on Very High Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions. He has served on the Organizing Committee of several of these biennial meetings, including one at Fermilab, and one he hosted in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Jones has also participated in a larger biennial conference series, often involved in the organization, presenting invited papers, and also topical summaries. These meetings are held on alternative years all over the world (South Africa, Canada, Japan, Australia, India, France, Brazil, Russia, Ireland, etc.).

Earlier in his career, Dr. Jones was a research assistant for the University of California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he was involved in accelerator technology research in a group which became the Midwestern Universities Research Association (MURA). This group invented the Fixed-Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator concept, and Dr. Jones (with Dr. Terwilliger, also of Michigan, now deceased, as are most the other major physicists in this collaboration) built the first operating accelerator using those concepts. Later in the 1960s, Dr. Jones led a group which built detectors and technology which enabled the detailed study of cosmic rays at mountain elevations in Colorado. This program included the only liquid hydrogen target ever used in cosmic ray research, and lead to some relevant research results. As a result, Dr. Jones has continued his interest and participation in cosmic ray research ever since, in addition to his research activities at the high-energy particle accelerators at Fermilab and CERN.

In 1952 he joined the faculty of the Physics Department of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, utilizing his expertise in elementary particle experimental physics. In the many decades that have passed, Dr. Jones has also served in the role of chairman of the physics department. In addition to his work in academia, he held the positions of visiting physicist and visiting scientist at such institutions as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, CERN (the European Laboratory for Elementary Particle Physics Research), Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermilab (the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory). He also held visiting positions at the University of Auckland, the University of Sydney, the University of Adelaide, Westfield College (London) and the Tata Institute (India).

An alumnus of Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Jones holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a PhD. His professional affiliations include the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. From 1991 to 1995, Dr. Jones was a member of the advisory panel of the Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. Notably, he has won many awards for his work in the field. Since the 1980s, Dr. Jones has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Lawrence Jones has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
