William R. Schonfeld Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Schonfeld has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in educational administration and political science

IRVINE, CA, September 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name William R. Schonfeld a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Schonfeld celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Schonfeld is a celebrated research professor of political science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), as well as the longest serving academic dean in the history of UCI. He led the School of Social Sciences from 1982 to 2002, establishing academic departments while creating interdisciplinary organized research units like the Institute of Mathematical Behavioral Sciences and the Center for the Study of Democracy. Though he achieved success as a political science teacher, he arrived to the position unintentionally; his career path is more the result of step by step choices than of a rational plan.

Born to William A. and Louise R. Schonfeld in New York City, Dr. Schonfeld was interested in becoming a teacher, and eventually decided to major in political science (rather than mathematics or English) at a time when the subject matter was especially relevant. It was 1964, when he earned a BA, Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude, with honors, from New York University's University Heights College, the same year as the landmark Civil Rights Act and the ratification of the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It was also the year he married his wife, Elena Beortegui, with whom he had two daughters: Natalie and Elizabeth. After completing a Fulbright year in France, Dr. Schonfeld went on to conduct research at the prestigious Princeton University where he earned a Master's degree and a PhD. He was welcomed by UCI in 1970 as an assistant professor of political science.

The year studying in France was very important to Dr. Schonfeld. He returned for his doctoral research, and afterwards in 1973-74, he joined Sceinces Po in Paris as a senior lecturer. In 1976, he returned to France for three years as a Researcher in the Centre de Sociologie des Organisations in Paris. In 1982, back at Irvine, he accepted the position of Dean of the School of Social Sciences. He served in that position for twenty years. His studies led him to write several books, including "Youth and Authority in France," "Obedience and Revolt," and "Ethnographie du P.S. et du R.P.R."

In recognition of his many achievements, Dr. Schonfeld was granted the 2002 Lauds and Laurels Extraordinarius Award, the highest honor granted by the UCI Alumni Association. He has also received a 1984 Distinguished Teaching Award from UCI, as well as a 1998 Distinguished Faculty Leadership Award for Teaching, the 2000-01 Daniel G. Aldrich Distinguished University Service Award, and a 2009 Undergraduate Education Award from the University of California. In support of his academic efforts, Dr. Schonfeld has been named a Fulbright Fellow, a Danforth Graduate Fellow, a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Paris, a National Science Foundation and Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique Exchange of Scientists Fellow, and a Ford Foundation grantee. He is also a finalist of the 1984 Professor of the Year Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Dr. Schonfeld is now retired, but he continues to teach and research. Following his service as Dean, he was Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy and also President of the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at UCI. He frequently returned to France, and taught as a visiting professor with the University of Paris II, for more than a decade. In 2007, he became a founding member of the Scientific Council of the Institute d'Etudes Avancees in Paris.

For his academic achievements, leadership, and international scholarship, Dr. Schonfeld was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in American Education, and the 1989 to 1990 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Schonfeld has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website.
