Birol Ali Yesilada Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Yesilada is a professor of political science and an endowed chair of contemporary Turkish Studies in Portland Oregon, as well as the executive director of the Center for Turkish Studies. In 2003, he was invited to the White House to participate in a task force for drafting a constitution for Afghanistan, and to incorporate the role of Islam in this new constitution. Dr. Yesilada is an expert on societies and governments, and works with overseas partners in his role with the Trans Research Consortium, an international research group.

Born in Nicosia, in the island nation of Cyprus, to Ali and Sermin Yesilada, Dr. Yesilada chose political science to be a scholar, and to use the knowledge and expertise to find solutions for the good of humanity. He was able to attend the University of California, Berkeley, to earn a Bachelor's degree in 1977, and went on to a Master's degree with San Francisco State University. Dr. Yesilada was selected for the Fulbright-Hays dissertation program in 1982, and in 1984, he received a PhD from the University of Michigan. His area of expertise is in looking at how and why peoples' values around the world change, and how societies converge or diverge. Dr. Yesilada's focus has been on European countries compared to Asian or North American countries. In his research, he has used cutting edge approaches such as agent based dynamic modeling, the findings of which were published in 2012.

Dr. Yesilada has taught at a string of universities, notably the Middle East Technological University in Ankara, Turkey from 1987 to 1988. He served concurrently as a visiting research specialist with the State Planning Organization in Ankara before returning to the University of Missouri as an associate professor. During the late '80s, he assisted the Library of Congress in Washington, and in 1990, he joined the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.

Other luminary organizations that have benefited from Dr. Yesilada include the U.S. State Department Foreign Service Institute, the National Intelligence Council, Rand Corporation, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the University of Missouri, Georgetown University, and the Istanbul Strategic Research Center in Bahcesehir University. From 1992 to 1998, Dr. Yesilada served as president of Oceania Corporation, and from 2000 to 2004, he joined BCM International as a partner. He was welcomed by Portland State as an endowed chair in 1998.

In addition to his role as an expert consultant, Dr. Yesilada has supported the board at the University of Missouri Peace Studies and the Constitutional Studies Foundation of Missouri. He is the author/co-author of a number of books on world politics and economy, including "Agrarian Reform in Reverse: The Food Crisis in the Third World," "The Emerging European Union," published in 1996, 2001, and 2003, "EU-Turkey Relations in the 21st Century," "Global Power Transition and the Future of the European Union". Dr. Yesilada is an editor of Comparative Political Parties and Party Elites, and was co-editor-in-chief of International Studies Perspectives, and associate editor of the MESA Bulletin. Additionally, he is a member of the International Studies Association, the American Political Science Association, the European Union Studies Association, the Middle East Studies Association, Rotary International in Oregon, and the Golden Key Honor Society.

For his achievements in political science, Dr. Yesilada has received a 1987 fellowship with the American Council of Learned Societies jointly with the Social Science Research Council, as well as a 1996 William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence from the University of Missouri and Commerce Bank. He is also the recipient of a 1995 award from the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation of Eczacibasi Holding, as well as a 1991 Purple Chalk Teaching Excellence Award from the Columbia Arts and Sciences College.

Dr. Yesilada was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in the Midwest, and the 2001 volume of Who's Who in the West. He is the father of Sermin and Selin with his wife Susan Diana Lesea, and enjoys jogging, swimming, camping, fly fishing, and ballroom dancing.
