Transitioning into higher education in 1969 as an associate professor of law at the University of Kansas, Mr. Murphy moved into the roles of full professor and associate dean of the university's law school. By 1983, he was asked to teach at Villanova University, coming on board as a visiting professor and working his way up to professor of law from 1984 to 2014. During his years in education, he was also a visiting professor at his alma mater, Cornell University, as well as at Georgetown University, and Haifa University in Israel. He also taught abroad during the summer months at institutions in Mexico City, Paris, London, and Aix-en Provence and taught for a year as a Charles H. Stockton Professor of International Law at the Naval War College.

Mr. Murphy is a member of the American Society of International Law, where he participated on the executive council and board of review and development, the American Bar Association, where he served as an alternate representative to the U.S. Mission to the UN from 2006 to 2007 and received a Louis B. Sohn Award for distinguished, long-standing contributions to the field of public international law in 2011, and the International Law Association, where he is now serving as an honorary vice president and patron for the American branch. He also served in a number of ways for the American Bar Association, as an alternative observer at the U.S. Mission to the UN, on the council of the organization's section of international law, as the section's international legal scholar, and as a member of the Francis Shattack Security & Peace Initiative. Additionally, he consulted for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the U.S. Departments of Justice and State, the UN Crime Prevention Unit, and others.

Over the past 40 years, Mr. Murphy contributed scholarly articles and reviews on international law and international terrorism, has written several books, including most recently, "The United States and the Rule of Law in International Affairs" in 2004 and "The Evolving Dimensions of International Law: Hard Choices for the World Community" in 2010, co-authored a number of books, and co-edited and contributed to "Legal Aspects of International Terrorism" with Alona E. Evans in 1978. A member of the editorial advisory board for The International Lawyer, Mr. Murphy is a former editorial board member for Terrorism and Political Violence and Transnational Publishers and former co-editor of the American Bar Association's World Order Under Law Reporter with Jay Vogelsong.

Passing the District of Columbia Bar in 1963, the Kansas Bar in 1970, and the Pennsylvania Bar in 1987, Mr. Murphy is married to Laura S.
