A dedicated educator, Mr. Britt recently celebrated 50 years as a history professor with Lee College. He initially joined the college in 1964, and later served as the honors program coordinator from 1995 until his retirement in 2014. Mr. Britt is also recognized as a co-founder of Second Chance, one of the oldest and largest prison education programs in the country. Founded through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Second Chance recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Britt has been widely recognized for his contributions as both a historian and educator. He was received numerous awards, including the Western Regional Faculty Award from the Association of Community College Trustees, Leadership Education Award from the Texas State Historical Society, Ima Hogg Achievement Award from the Center of American History at the University of Texas, and Ottis Locke Excellence in Teaching Award from the East Texas Historical Society. In addition, he has been featured in the 64th through 69th editions of Who's Who in America, which were published between 2009 and 2014. He received the Betty Trap Chapman Award from Houston History Alliance in 2015.
An accomplish author, Mr. Britt has published numerous articles in local papers and professional journals pertaining to his work as a historian and adventures as a history teacher. Previously, he provided assistance as an editor for the "Baytown Vignettes," a historical anthology detailing the history of the Texas Gulf Coast community. Mr. Britt currently serves as the president of the Monica Boyd Literacy Foundation, where he previously held the position of treasurer.
In 2013, Mr. Britt was recognized for his work as a historian by the Texas House of Representatives. Mr. Britt has held numerous roles with local and regional organizations, including the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center, Chambers County Historical Commission and National Collegiate Honors Council. Additionally, he maintains active involvement with the Bay Area Heritage Society, Texas Community College Teachers Association and East Texas Historical Association.
