David James Brayden, PhD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Pharmacologist, Dr. Brayden, is very active in his field serving as Full Professor of Advanced Drug Delivery at the University College Dublin (UCD) School of Veterinary Medicine since 2014, as well as a co-principal investigator for the Science Foundation of Ireland Center for Medical Devices (CURAM) since 2014, deputy coordinator of an EU FP7 Consortium since 2012, and longtime lecturer in veterinary pharmacology at the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine. Recruited by UCD in 2001, he was appointed as Senior Lecturer in 2005, earning the position of Associate Professor one year later, and Full Professor in 2014.

A Fellow of the UCD Conway Institute, Dr. Brayden served as chairman of the UCD animal research ethics committee from 2005 to 2007, and served on the UCD research ethics committee from 2006-2013. Furthermore, he was Head of Veterinary Biosciences from 2013-2017 and was elected to serve on the UCD Promotions and Tenure committee from 2010 to 2013.

Completing a Bachelor's degree with honors and Master's degree at UCD, followed by a Master of Philosophy and PhD at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Brayden completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford University in 1991. That same year, he set up Elan Corporation's pharmacology laboratory in Dublin. At Elan Biotechnology Research, he became a senior scientist and project manager of several of Elan's join-venture drug delivery research collaborations with U.S. biotech companies. Dr. Brayden continues to serve as an independent consultant for various pharmaceutical companies.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Dr. Brayden has authored and co-authored more than 100 research articles as a result of his research, including, most recently, "A comparison of three Peyer's patch M-like cell culture models: particle uptake, bacterial interaction, and epithelial histology," in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics in July 2017. Some of Dr. Brayden's research interests include oral peptide delivery and nanoparticle formulations of calcitonin and insulin. He has served on various editorial advisory boards, including Drug Discovery Today, the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, and the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2010, Dr. Brayden was named Associate Editor for a new international journal titled Therapeutic Delivery and was appointed Senior Associate Editor in 2017.

Dr. Brayden has served on a host of committees throughout his career, and served as both chairman of the UK-Ireland chapter of the Controlled Release Society (CRS) and co-chair of the Veterinary Programmes at the CRS international conferences. A Fellow of CRS since 2012, Dr. Brayden was elected to the CRS Board of Scientific Advisors from 2009-2012. He is also active in the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AAPS) and will become an AAPS Fellow at their annual meeting in November, 2017.

The recipient of a successful Principle Investigator Grant from the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI) from 2005 to 2009, Dr. Brayden also served as the director of an SFI Research Cluster grant (The Irish Drug Delivery Network) that was awarded 7.2 million euro by the organization in 2007. He earned a Best Research Paper Prize alongside his team granted by the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics in 2005, and has been named to several editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World.
