Operating as director of interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and professor of medicine/cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical School, he specializes in the non-surgical treatment of mitral and aortic stenosis and transcatheter aortic valve replacement in addition to coronary interventions. Known for performing many complex coronary interventions in the U.S., he has been recognized for having the highest angioplasty success rate and the lowest mortality rate for any interventional cardiologist in the state of New York.

Returning to his native country of India every month for 3 to 4 days to visit Eternal Hospital in Jaipur, a National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers accredited state-of-the-art heart hospital that he established, Indian cardiologists have the ability to train under him and work in the same capacity. A very successful and very rewarding venture, the hospital is now able to perform heart transplants on patients. Dr. Sharma completed his undergraduate studies at Maharaja College in India in 1972, followed by an MD at SMS Medical College in Rajasthan University. He then fulfilled his internship in internal medicine and residency at SMS Hospital from 1978 to 1982, a second residency in internal medicine at New York University Downtown Hospital from 1983 to 1986, and a fellowship in cardiology at City Hospital Center at Elmhurst in Queens, New York, the following year. From 1989 to 1990, he also completed doctoral studies at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Serving on the Cardiac Advisory Board of New York State since 2004, Dr. Sharma advises the Health Department and governor on issues of health policies and supervision, safety, and appropriateness of heart care by various hospitals in New York. Dr. Sharma is also the vice president of the Rajasthan Development Foundation, where he has donated medical equipment every year from 2001 to 2007 to help Rajasthan's people in need.

Dr. Sharma has been featured on the Today Show and in various publications, to include the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Barron's, Forbes, Newsweek, Wash. Post, Crain's New York Business, Newsday, New York Post, New York Sun, Earthtimes, India Abroad, and India Today for his work. The recipient of an honorary degree by Rajasthan University in 2015, he was also the recipient of a Mount Sinai Physician of the Year Award and a Jacobi Medallion Award in 2007. Awarded with a Cardiology Fellows Appreciation Award in 2009, and a Simon Dack Best Teacher Award for cardiology in 2000, they were both the result of his passion for teaching and training fellows.

Additionally, Dr. Sharma received a Prestigious Award by the Government of India in 2002. a Governor's Award of Excellence in 2006 by New York State for outstanding contributions to medicine, was named One of Top Physicians by Castle Connelly, Consumer Research Council of America, and was named to Best Doctors by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Sharma has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
