Driven by a desire to do his best and make a difference in the world, Dr. Cox became the founder, president and medical director of Project Access Tarrant County in 2010. In this position, he draws upon nearly 50 years of medical experience to improve access to medical care. Since 2011, the initiative has donated more than $11 million worth of medical services to those in need. Dr. Cox is also a recognized chairman of the EMC CME Committee, as well as a member of the board of directors with the Texas Alliance for Patient Access. In recognition of his commitment to health care, he was chosen as the recipient of the Humanitarian Award by the Tarrant County Medical Society in 2012. In addition, Dr. Cox was named a Health Care Hero by the Fort Worth Business Press in 2014.

The first in his family to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Cox knew he wanted to be a physician since he was 15-years-old. He received formal education at Louisiana State University before attending Tulane University, where he completed an MD in 1975. Dr. Cox went on to complete an internship and residency in family practice with John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth between 1975 and 1978. Although he began his medical career in family practice, he later moved into emergency medicine because he felt this area would allow him to have the greatest impact on health care as a whole.

Dr. Cox began serving in leadership roles in 1981 when he joined Henderson County Memorial Hospital as the vice chief of medical staff. Throughout the course of his career, he has also served as the chief of medical staff and director with Lakeland Medical Center, as well as the vice chief of the emergency medicine department, director of occupational medicine, chief of the emergency department, secretary of medical staff and secretary of the emergency medicine division with Harris Methodist Hospital. During this time, Dr. Cox also maintained a private practice in Athens between 1978 and 1984 and Fort Worth between 1984 and 2010. He is a recognized diplomate through the American Board of Family Practice and American Board of Emergency Medicine.

An accomplished author, Dr. Cox is credited with writing "Intestinal Obstruction: A Programmed Text," which was published in 1975. He maintains active involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the Tarrant County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association and American Medical Association. In addition, he is a recognized fellow with the American Academy of Family Physicians and American College of Emergency Physicians. He previously served as a member of the board of directors with the MD Political Action Committee and North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership.

Dr. Cox has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in the first through eighth editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, 11th and 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and third and fourth editions of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
