Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A physicist and longtime professor at Korea University, Dr. Hong began a new role with The Korean Physical Society (KPS) in 2016, serving as chairman of the division of nuclear physics. With more than 23,000 members with scientific and technological backgrounds, KPS is one of 13 partner societies of The Japan Society of Applied Physics. Just celebrating his 20th anniversary teaching at Korea University in the department of physics, Dr. Hong's talents and education in the field also had him serving as an associate dean in the college of science between 2012 and 2014.

Prior to joining Korea University, Dr. Hong had the opportunity to work as a research scientist for GSI in Darmstadt, Germany from 1995 to 1997. The organization operates a worldwide, unique, large-scale accelerator facility for heavy ions with a goal reaching a better understanding of the structure and behavior of the world around us through scientific research. Dr. Hong was also a visiting scientist between the years of 2010 and 2011 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, a multipurpose research institution located on Long Island, New York funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Dr. Hong has made some significant contributions to several experiments in nuclear physics. He has also made several detector developments in the field, such as a time-projection chamber and a resistive plate chamber. He has contributed various analyses on the strange production, collective flow, and quarkonium production for quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong interaction among quarks and gluons, as well as several applications of particle detectors to medical physics. Furthermore, Dr. Hong has made a substantial contribution to experimental and theoretical investigations, especially the discovery of explosive expansion of hot, dense nuclear matter and quarkonium suppression of the quark-gluon plasma in early universe.

In 1987, Dr. Hong received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Korea University, followed by a Master of Arts in Physics from Hampton University in Virginia in 1989, and a PhD in Physics from Stony Brook University in 1995. He is a fellow of KPS, a founding member of the executive committee for the division of nuclear physics with the Association of Asia-Pacific Physical Societies, and a board member of the Asian Nuclear Physics Association.

In 1991, Dr. Hong received a NASA Honorary Award for an outstanding publication with the space directorate at NASA Langley Research Center in the U.S. In 2007, he was the recipient of two awards, a Best Teaching Award from Korea University and a Best Paper Award granted by KPS.
