TAMPA, FL, October 17, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William D. Kearns has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Kearns earned his doctoral degree in 1989 from the University of South Florida before joining the faculty in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research interest lays in Gerontechnology, specifically in the development of movement surveillance and analysis, and in cognitive prosthetics supporting the physical, social and community health of persons with disabilities. The most recent application of his technology has been to address cognitive functional limitations of dementia and traumatic brain injuries. He has been a principal investigator or investigator on research programs funded by the US Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Ubisense Corporation.

Professor Kearns is the President of the International Society for Gerontechnology, an organization representing scientists and engineers from 26 nations engaged in developing technologies to support older adults living well to a great age. He is an Associate Editor for the society's flagship journal, Gerontechnology and he is the inventor of the Human and Physical Asset Movement Pattern Analyzer (US Patent 7,978,085 B1). Professor Kearns is a member of the US Department of Veterans Affairs SmartHome team, which distinguished itself by winning 3rd place in the VA's National Brain Trust Competition in 2016. Significantly, the team won 2nd place in the VA Center for Innovation national "Demo Day" competition in August 2017. In the coming years, Professor Kearns intends to continue his research into developing analytical tools for studying the relationships of cognitive impairment to variations in human movement occurring in the natural environment.
