Women In Government and The Council of State Governments Approve Historic Affiliation Strengthening State Political Leadership Nationwide

Two premier national organizations for state political leaders affiliate

WASHINGTON, DC, October 17, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Two premier national organizations for state political leaders inked an historic agreement today. With more than a century of combined leadership and service on behalf of state political leaders, The Council of State Governments, or CSG, and Women In Government, or WIG, entered into a strategic affiliation effective Nov. 16, 2017.

"Women account for nearly a quarter of all state legislators," said Colorado Sen. Nancy Todd, chair of WIG's Board of Directors. "Our vision and experience are essential to decision-making at a time when state leadership is more important than ever before."

The affiliation enhances the strengths of both organizations and has value-added benefits for synergy among all leaders in state government. Both organizations retain their separate boards and missions and will combine expertise and capacity to address the complex policy issues facing states today.

"Women make up more than half of the country's population, and it is crucial that leadership--whether in state capitols, courtrooms or boardrooms across the country--becomes more representative of our people," said CSG 2017 National President, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown. "Through this partnership, we will be able to affirm our commitment to empowering women and propelling more women into positions of leadership."

Women In Government Foundation, Inc., headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of women state legislators that provides leadership opportunities, networking, expert forums, and educational resources to address and resolve complex public policy issues to all women state legislators. Women In Government leads the nation with a bold, courageous and passionate vision that empowers and mobilizes all women legislators to effect sound policy in areas such as healthcare, education, energy, the environment, transportation, criminal justice and more.

The Council of State Governments is the nation's only organization serving all three branches of state government. CSG is a region-based forum that fosters the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy. This offers unparalleled regional, national and international opportunities to network, develop leaders, collaborate and create problem-solving partnerships.
