A widely renowned medicinal chemistry educator with more than 60 years of experience, Dr. Shen most recently served as an emeritus and research professor with the University of Virginia from 1996 to 2001. He is noted for numerous achievements in the area of scientific research, notably the invention of indomethacin, including more than 200 U.S. patents on related anti-inflammatory aryl propionic acid structures. Since the drug's world-wide approval in the '60s, indomethacin has been used as a highly potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory with inhibitory activity against arachidonic acid cyclooxygenase, as well as a unique research probe in broad biomedical research, with more than 50,000 published citations. He is also the discoverer of synthesis of bioactive natural product derivatives and drug targeting ligands. Dr. Shen was inducted into the American Chemical Society Hall of Fame of the division of medicinal chemistry in 2007.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Shen has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World. He was also selected as the recipient of the Achievement Award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers - USA in 1984, Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry by the American Chemical Society in 1980, and the Rene Descartes Medal by the Universite Paris-Sorbonne in 1977. Furthermore, Dr. Shen has earned the Director's Science Award by Merck & Co., Inc. in 1976 and Outstanding Patent Award by The Research & Development Council of New Jersey in 1975.

Prior to pursuing a career in the area of scientific research, Dr. Shen received a Bachelor of Science from National Central University in 1946 and a diploma from Imperial College of Science and Technology in 1948. He went on to attend the University of Manchester, where he completed a PhD in 1950 and a Doctor of Science in 1978. During this time, Dr. Shen served as a research associate with Ohio State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For three decades, he served Merck, Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories in a variety of roles, including as a senior research chemist, director of synthetic chemical research, and vice president of membrane and arthritis research.

Dr. Shen joined the University of Virginia as Alfred Burger professor of medicinal chemistry in 1986. He held this position for 10 years before he was recognized as an emeritus and research professor with the university. Dr. Shen has been recognized as an honorary professor with numerous institutions located throughout the world, including the Beijing Medical University, Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Institute of Materia Medica and China Pharmaceutical University.

Additionally, Dr. Shen previously served as an advisor with Academia Sinica Taiwan. In an effort to remain active and engaged in the field of medicinal research, Dr. Shen maintains involvement with the New York Academy of Sciences, American Chemical Society, Chinese American Chemical Society and Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
