An accomplished writer and editor, Mr. Merrell applies more than 40 years of experience into his position as the president of Merrell Enterprises. He has authored a wide range of works throughout the course of his career, including "Talking Tombstones," "Reflections of an Ole Alabama Country Boy," "My Name is America! I Was Born at Jamestown!," "The Merrells of Alabama" and "A Christmas Gift." Mr. Merrell maintains involvement with the Jamestown Speakers Bureau, National Press Club, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiques, Regent's Circle of Mount Vernon, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and Colonial Williamsburg Raleigh Tavern Society. Additionally, he is recognized as a charter member of General Washington's Council of the 1607 Society.

Prior to discovering a talent for writing, Mr. Merrell looked forward to a promising baseball career. While serving in the U.S. Army between 1960 and 1962, he set the Second U.S. Army record for striking out the most batters in a single game, 19, in the 1961 Second Army Tournament while pitching for Fort Lee, VA, against Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
When an arm injury seemed to end his future as a professional athlete, Mr. Merrell began working as a radio announcer. It was during this time that his editor discovered his potential as a writer. Since then, Mr. Merrell has enjoyed a lucrative career as a writer and editor.

Mr. Merrell served as a writer and editor for Hopewell News from 1963 to 1965 before accepting a position as a state editor for Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1965 to 1968. During the following decade, he served briefly as a public information officer for Kettering Medical Center and then for several years as assistant and editor of Transport Topics, as well as special assistant to the president of American Trucking Associations. He gained further experience as a member of the public relations committee with the American Movers Conference, instructor and first president of the Dale Carnegie Courses, and speechwriter for the Interstate Commerce Commission Chairman. Since 1977, Mr. Merrell has served as the president of Merrell Enterprises.

Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Merrell has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. He was also selected for inclusion in the Personalities of the South, which recognizes past achievements and ability, as well as the Dictionary of International Biography, through which he received a Certificate of Merit for Consistent Column-Writing Excellence. Mr. Merrell previously won first place in news writing and editorial writing through the Virginia Press Association. In addition, he was named the recipient of the George Washington Honor Medal, which he received through the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in 2002. Several of his articles have been entered in the Congressional Record.
