A primary care internist, Dr. Arling has been seeing patients from adolescent to gerontology since 1977 as the founder of his own private practice, Doctors Arling & Arling, in Washington, D.C. Affiliated with George Washington University Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital, he is certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Arling has been teaching as a clinical professor of medicine at George Washington University for the past 29 years, and has been teaching in the same capacity at Georgetown University for the past 20 years.

Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a physician, Dr. Arling has been consistently named to Best Doctors in America by Naifen & Smith, and was named a Top MD by Washingtonian Magazine (Peer Review) and Consumers' Checkbook Magazine (Patients Ecaluations). He has also been recognized as a Super Doctor by the Washington Post Magazine, among Best Doctors in America by the Southeast Region, and among Best Doctors in Town by Washington Magazine. In 2011, he also received Highest Citation for Best Internist. He has been highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World many times.

A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Arling has served periodically on the advisory council on medical education at Harvard Medical School since 2003. He has been an executive committee member of the Academy of Medicine of Washington, D.C. for 20 years, and serves as an active member of numerous other organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians of Washington, D.C. and the American Society of Internal Medicine.

After earning a Bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, at the University of Minnesota in 1965 and an MD at Harvard University in 1969, Dr. Arling completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Stanford University. He was the full-time internal medicine residency program director at George Washington University from 1974 to 1978.

While in the Public Health Service from 1971 to 1973, he was a special assistant to the administrator of health services and mental health administration for the U.S. Public Health Service in Rockville, MD, and the chief medical director in VA Central Office in Washington, D.C.
