An accomplished professor who has taught with Northeastern University in Boston since 1980, Dr. Vernon is well-known as the author of several business and management textbooks, notably "Business and Society: A Managerial Approach" with Frederick D. Sturdivant, part of the Irwin series on management and behavioral sciences. Dr. Vernon also holds the title of senior professor with the Prasetiya Mulya Graduate School of Management in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been a senior consultant with Global Resources in Corona del Mar, CA, since 1992. She is a valued resource in the management of multinational corporations.

The daughter of Raymond and Josephine Vernon, Dr. Vernon was born in Washington, and is a graduate of the prestigious Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where she earned an AB in 1960. She earned a diplome at Paris Cordon Bleu in 1971. She owned and ran her own culinary academy, Heidi Wortzel's Cooking School in Newton, MA, from 1970 to 1975. Dr. Vernon returned to academia at Boston University, where she completed an AM in 1978 and a PhD in 1980. She was welcomed by Northeastern University that year, and first contributed to business literature with "Business and Society," which was first published in 1990 and reached its sixth edition in 1998. She is also the author of the 1992 book "Lowell: The Corporations and the City," the seminal work on Lowell during the Civil War as well as the co-author of "Strategic Management in the Global Environment" in 1989, which reached its third edition in 1997. She was the first woman promoted to full professor in Northeastern University's College of Business Administration.

Dr. Vernon is a member and fellow of the Eastern Academy of Management, where she serves as a board member and as secretary from 1988 to 1991. She was division chair of the Academy of Management in 1992, and is a member of the Academy of International Business. Dr. Vernon was honored for her dedication in business education with inclusion in the 27th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, the 7th edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 27th edition of Who's Who in the East, as well as six volumes of Who's Who in America and two volumes of Who's Who of American Women. Dr. Vernon co-authored "Strategic Management in the Global Economy" in 1996 with her first husband, Lawrence H. Wortzel, who passed away shortly after the book's release. She has two children from their union: Joshua C. and Jennifer R. Stiller. Dr. Vernon married Professor F. Gerard Adams 1996 and he passed away in 2011.
