A physician, clinical research scientist, educator, and Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science, Dr. Chakkera has served as a consultant in the division of nephrology, hypertension, and kidney transplantation since 2005. However, Dr. Chakkera has been most proud of her professional ability to gain a full professorship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine within 11 years after completion of her fellowship training and joining Mayo Clinic. During these years, Dr. Chakkera was the director of the nephrology fellowship program and transplant nephrology fellowship program in 2011, as well as the pancreas transplant medical director since 2012.

In her current clinical role, Dr. Chakkera is responsible for determining the eligibility for kidney and pancreas transplants, doing living-donor evaluations to determine suitability and providing complex coordination and care for patients after kidney and pancreas transplants. She also promotes her patients' understanding of their disease, empowering them to become partners in managing their health. Dr. Chakkera is recognized as a national and international content expert in the areas of metabolic disease and diabetes associated with transplantation. She has received several research grants and is the author of expert content and publishes in high-impact journals. She is a seminal leader in elucidating the mechanisms & consequences of post-transplant diabetes.

Inspired by her parents, her mother, a retired nurse, Dr. Chakkera was exposed to service and voluntary work during her childhood and teenage years, which had a great impact on her decision years later to pursue a career in her chosen field. Going on to complete her medical degree at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College, Bangalore University in her home country of India in 1994, she then completed her internship in internal medicine in 1997 as well as residency in internal medicine in 1999 at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN. Becoming certified in internal medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1999, she pursued fellowship in general nephrology at a premier U.S. training institution - the University of California, San Francisco in 2000. Additionally, she completed a Master of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. Later that year, she became certified in nephrology, and pursued a fellowship in transplant nephrology in 2003 which she completed in 2005 also at the University of California, San Francisco.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Chakkera has received numerous accolades for her work. She was a 1996 and 1998 honoree of a Regional American College of Physicians Clinical Vignette Poster Competition and a National American College of Physicians Poster Competition finalist in 1997. She received grants from the National Institute of Health including a fellowship grant (NIH T32) in 2001 and the Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Award - NIH F-32 grant in 2003 and NIHKL2 multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development Award grant in 2008. She was the recipient of the Clinical Science Fellowship Grant - American Society of Transplantation in 2003. In 2011 she was the recipient of the Research Early Development Award by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

She has excelled as an educator mentoring several trainees over the years. She is the fellowship director of both the General Nephrology Fellowship and Transplant Nephrology Fellowships at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Additionally, she is the Chair of the Student Promotion and Assessment Committee: Mayo Clinic, School of Medicine, AZ Campus.

She is a fellow and member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Diabetes Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Chakkera has been honored many times for her research and clinical work in medicine. She was recognized in Phoenix Super Doctors in 2012, and was named One of America's Top Physicians by the Consumers Research Council of America in 2007. Furthermore, Dr. Chakkera was highlighted in Who's Who in America in 2015 and 2016, as well as Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 2011 to 2012.
