Heather F. Smith Celebrates 15 Years of Research and Teaching Experience in Anatomical Sciences

Dr. Smith is a Clinical Faculty member in Biomedical Sciences on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), and has published over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles



    GLENDALE, AZ, November 28, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Heather F. Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Smith serves as the director of anatomical laboratories at Midwestern University, where she also works as an associate professor in the department of anatomy. Dr. Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts in biological anthropology from Arizona State University in 2001. After graduation, she entered an intensive graduate program at Stony Brook University, where she received training in anatomy and earned a Master of Arts in 2003. Dr. Smith received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2008, and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine Phoenix in 2009. Dr. Smith joined the department of anatomy at Midwestern University in 2009, and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2013.

Dr. Smith has an active research program in anatomical sciences, and has authored 27 scientific peer-reviewed journal articles on topics such as brachial plexus variation, the vermiform appendix, and cranial morphology. Her research has been highlighted in Science Magazine and Atlas of Science, and she serves on the editorial board for the research journal Biomedical Research International in the anatomy division. As a professor, she has been teaching human gross anatomy for 10 years. Dr. Smith has served as the course director for anatomy courses for physical therapy, physician assistant, and nurse anesthesia, dental, and optometry students, and has taught anatomy to osteopathic medical and podiatric students. She is a recipient of the 2013 "Dream Team" Teaching Award.

Dr. Smith intends to continue the development of her research program, and apply her knowledge of anatomy curricula and extensive laboratory experience to the oversight of the gross anatomy laboratories and the body donation program at Midwestern University.
