An immunologist, professor, and deputy chairman in the department of immunology and microbiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Tse initially joined the department in 1986 as an associate professor. His laboratory, where his research emphasis covers autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases, uses an animal model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, to study immune regulation of the central nervous system. Another area of research within his laboratory covers the understanding of how immune T cells regulate the development of atherosclerosis, a precursor of cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and strokes.
Dr. Tse completed a Bachelor's degree with honors at California Institute of Technology in 1972, followed by graduate work at the University of California, receiving a Ph.D. in Immunology in 1977. From 1977 to 1980, he trained in immunogenetics in the laboratories of Dr. William Paul and Dr. Ronald Schwartz at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He was then recruited as a Senior Research Immunologist to the Department of Immunology, Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories, the research arm of Merck & Company. At Merck, Dr. Tse collaborated with his colleague, Dr. Ted Hanson, and worked on the genetics and immune responses of a Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Class II IAb mutant, the bm12 mouse. He was later promoted to the rank of a Research Fellow. During his time at Merck, he also obtained adjunct assistant professor appointments at Rutgers University and Colombia University teaching undergraduates and medical students. He later decided to obtain a Master of Business Administration at Rutgers University by going to evening classes after work. He graduated in 1986, the year he moved from Merck to Wayne State University to devote to teaching and research.
Besides his scientific research, Dr. Tse also authored two books. The first book, "Drug of Abuse: Body Fluid Testing", was published in 2005. It is a comprehensive review of the science of drug testing in all its aspects, placing emphasis on technologies that use body fluids in addition to urine for determining the presence of drugs of abuse. The second book, "Lateral Flow Immunoassay", which was published in 2008, describes how lateral flow immunoassay has undergone tremendous growth in the diagnostic industry in the last decade; it also covers how the scope of utilization, the principle of the technology, the patent concerns, information on the development and production of the test device, and specific applications will be of interest to the diagnostic industry and the general scientific community. Dr. Tse has also authored many professional articles in journals such as the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Immunology, and the Journal of Neuroimunology.
A member and former president of the Chinese Student Association and the Detroit Immunological Society, Dr. Tse is also a member of the American Association of Immunologists and the Society of Chinese Bioscientists of America. The recipient of a NIH Research Career Development Award from 1992 to 1997, Dr. Tse also received numerous other awards throughout his career, including several WSU College Teaching Awards and a WSU Faculty Research Award in 1996. For the last twenty years, Dr. Tse has also served as regular members of several NIH study sections, including Immunological Sciences (IMS), Hypersensitivity, Autoimmune and Immune-mediated Diseases (HAI), Clinical Immunology and Brain Tumors (CNBT) and National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) study sections.
Dr. Tse has been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
