Hou-min Chang, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    RALEIGH, NC, December 05, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Hou-min Chang, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Chang celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A Professor Emeritus in the department of forest biomaterials at North Carolina State University, Dr. Chang first studied in his home country of Taiwan, earning a Bachelor of Science in Forestry at National Taiwan University in 1962. He then came to the US to attend the University of Washington where he completed a Master of Science in Chemistry in 1966 and a PhD in Wood Chemistry in 1968. During his study at the University of Washington, he served three years as a research assistant. In 1968, he moved to Raleigh, NC and become a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State University. He was hired as an assistant professor in 1970, promoted to full professor in 1977and had become a R.B. Robertson distinguished professor by 1990 where he remained in position until he retired in 2005. He has been continuing his research work at North Carolina State University since his retirement.

Dr. Chang holds eight U.S. patents in his field, has co-edited three books, wrote 20 book chapters and has published over 180 peer reviewed articles to scientific and technical journals, most recently including "Lignocentric analysis of a carbohydrate-producing lignocellulosic biorefinery process" in Bioresource Technology as well as "A two-stage pretreatment using acidic dioxane followed by dilute hydrochloric acid on sugar production from corn stover" in RSC Advances, both in 2017. His research interests are in the chemistry of lignin, chemical processing of wood, chemistry of pulping and bleaching processes, pollution abatement in pulp and paper mills and conversion of biomass to chemicals and biofuel.

A former visiting senior researcher at Taiwan Forestry Research Institute in Taipei, Taiwan, during 2002, Dr. Chang was also a visiting professor at Kyoto University in 1998 and the University of Tokyo in 1981. He also spent a sabbatical year as a scientific specialist with Weyerhaeuser Company in Seattle in 1976. He is a fellow and longtime board of directors of the International Academy of Wood Science, and member of the American Chemical Society. He is a longtime member of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), inducted as a TAPPI Fellow in 1999 and served on the board of directors from 1999-2002.

In 2010, he received the Watauga Medal, North Carolina State University's highs nonacademic honor, and was name the Outstanding Alumni of the Pulp and Paper Foundation of the University of Washington. Dr. Chang's 35 years in academia earned him two Outstanding Graduate Teaching Awards granted by the North Carolina Alumni Association in 1993 and 1994. He previously earned a Technology Award by the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry in 1992, an Alumni Outstanding Research Award by North Carolina State University in 1985, and a Sigma Xi Research Award in 1974. Furthermore, he was highlighted in the 57th and 58th editions of Who's Who in America.
