Marquis Who's Who Recognizes Dr. Richard Brilliant for Excellence in Education

Dr. Brilliant celebrates more than 40 years with Columbia University



    NEW YORK, NY, December 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Richard Brilliant has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 40 years of service, Dr. Brilliant has been a professor emeritus of art history and archaeology for Columbia University since 2004. Before retiring, he held a variety of roles with the school, including as the Anna S. Garbedian professor in the humanities from 1990 to 2004, and professor of art history and archaeology from 1970 to 2004. He served as a visiting professor at Princeton University in 1986, visiting Mellon Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971, and from assistant professor to professor and chairman of the University of Pennsylvania department of art history from 1962 to 1970. Additionally, he lent his expertise to the New York Historical Society in 2004 and 2005, and was a news consultant for WNET-TV in New York City from 1984 to 1989. He also served Columbia University as the director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America from 1996 to 2000 and as chairman of the Governing Board of the Society of Fellows from 1981 to 1984.

Dr. Brilliant obtained a BA from Yale University, magna cum laude, in 1951 before obtaining an LLB from Harvard University in 1954. He returned to Yale to earn a PhD in 1960. He has authored numerous publications on art topics, ranging from Roman art to portraiture. His most recent works include "Death: From Dust to Destiny," published in 2017, and "My Laocoon" and "Un Americano a Roma," both published in 2000. He has provided his expertise as a guest curator for many institutions, including the New York Historical Society, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, and the Jewish Museum in New York City, where he was also an exhibitor. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences at Yale University, the American School of Classical Studies, the College Art Association, and Phi Beta Kappa Society. His is also a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and has acted as a member of the managing committee of the American School of Classical Studies from 1974 to 2007. Dr. Brilliant won teaching awards from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and from Columbia University in 1994, and served as editor-in-chief of The Art Bulletin from 1991 to 1994.

Dr. Brilliant has been recognized in academia and the art world with multiple awards and commendations, including a Distinguished Scholar Award from the College Art Association in 2005. He was recognized as a fellow of the American Academy in Rome from 1960 to 1962, and of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1967 and 1968. The National Endowment of the Humanities also recognized him as a senior fellow in 1972 and 1973, and he was a Fulbright grantee in Rome, Italy from 1957 to 1959. He attributes his success to his longevity, reasonable curiosity, and enormous persistence and determination. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, traveling, and tasting wine. He is the son of Frank and Pauline Brilliant, and he has been married to Eleanor Luria for more than 65 years. They are the parents of four children, Stephanie, Livia, Franca, and Myron, as well as the grandparents of 12 and great-grandparents to seven.
