Sherwood "Woody" W. Wise Jr., PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    TALLAHASSE, FL, December 09, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Sherwood "Woody" W. Wise Jr., PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Wise celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Marine geologist and professor emeritus of geology at Florida State University (FSU), Dr. Wise began teaching in 1971, later retiring in 2016 after 46 years in the classroom. During his tenure, he trained students on the microscope from the primary literature in a series of micropaleontology courses to ensure that they could participate independently in their own oceanographic expeditions at sea. While on campus, Dr. Wise used micropaleontology to elucidate modern and ancient climates and oceanography, looked at the physical and chemical properties of carbonate and siliceous sediments, including their origins and subsequent changes via diagenesis, and obtained research materials, primarily on research cruises and expeditions in the world's oceans, with a particular emphasis on the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. The research cruises he participated on included Glomar Challenger Legs 18, 36, 71, and 93 (Co-chief Scientist on the latter), ARA Islas Orcadas Cruises 11(Co-chief Geologist) and 16 (Chief Scientist), JOIDES RESOLUTION Legs 113, 120 (Co-chief Scientist), 173, 183, and 207, and N.B. Palmer SHALDRIL I and II (Co-chief Scientst/PI on both).

One of the greatest aspects of the job, however, was being able to supervise many PhD and Master's level students throughout his career. Those students graduated to date are: Ph.D. (24): A. E. During the course of his vocation, Dr. Wise received Petroleum Research Funds from the American Chemical Society plus numerous National Science Foundation grants, as well as an Outstanding Paper Award by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists in 1971. He is the author of "Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project," published in 1977, 1983, and 1993. Also known for participating as the co-director of the Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility and being involved in the ANDRILL (Antarctic geological drilling) project, he served on various organizations, including the science advisory committee for the United States, the Information Handling Panel with the Joint Oceanographic Institutes, and as a member of the southern oceans panel for the Ocean Drilling Project. An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Geological Society of America, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Dr. Wise is a past president of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists.

Prior to joining the faculty at FSU, Dr. Wise was a National Science Foundation fellow, Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule Zurich, from 1970 to 1971. He holds a BS from Washington and Lee University, MS from the University of Illinois, and PhD in Geology from the University of Illinois, and served two years in the U.S. Army Artillery as a section Commander and Commanding Officer (Captain), from 1965-1967 with the USA Missile Det., Germany.
