A mechanical engineer and former sales engineer of Caterpillar, John Deere, Coles, and Poclain construction and earthmoving equipment at Larsen & Toubro Ltd. as well as exports of L&T industrial equipment, Dr. Palia entered academia as a teaching fellow in the College of Business Administration at Kent State University in 1977, during his doctoral degree program. He has since remained in higher education, joining the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1984 and acquiring appointments as an assistant, associate, and full professor in the College of Business Administration, renamed Shidler College of Business in 2006 after alumni donor Jay Shidler. Dr. Palia also spent time as the president of the CBA faculty council and senator of the University of Hawaii at Manoa's faculty congress.
Currently teaching MKT 391 Marketing Strategies and BUS 312 Principles of Marketing, Dr. Palia formerly taught various graduate and undergraduate level courses. He has been responsible for conducting many executive development seminars at the Marketing Institute of Singapore and Kathmandu College of Management. At the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing he taught an executive development program. He has continued teaching in the executive MBA program and MBA program at several universities in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as marketing management programs and seminars at leading educational institutions in such countries as China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, and notably at a faculty seminar on countertrade in New Zealand. Furthermore, he has served as a visiting professor and senior fellow at several overseas institutions, including the National University of Singapore, Vietnam National University, and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Palia has also given a seminar on countertrade at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
Dr. Palia spent several years researching such topics as countertrade in the Asia Pacific region, parallel imports, and U.S. Steel trigger price mechanism. His more recent research has included strategic market planning, market segmentation and positioning, and web-based marketing decision support systems and graphic packages. He holds a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Bangalore, an MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a Doctorate of Business Administration with a major focus on international business and a minor focus on international economics from Kent State University.
Recognized for his teaching excellence at three universities, Dr. Palia has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching, two CBA Excellence in Teaching Awards, and a Mortar Board Outstanding Educator Award. He has also received several grants in support of his work and authored dozens of articles in such journals as the Industrial Marketing Management, the European Journal of Marketing, and the International Marketing Review.
