Frederic Michael Scherer, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Scherer, Aetna professor emeritus of public policy and corporate management in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, taught at the prestigious university for 20 years. He previously taught economics for 22 years at Swarthmore College, Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, and Princeton University. He was chief economist for the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC, in the mid-1970s. Dr. Scherer's research specialties are industrial economics and the economics of technological change. The author of several books, including "The Weapons Acquisition Process" in 1964, "Industrial Market Structure and Economic Performance" in 1970, and "The Economics of Multi-Plant Operation" in 1975, he more recently authored "Quarter Notes and Bank Notes: The Economics of Music Composition in the 18th and 19th Centuries" through Princeton University Press in 2004, and "New Perspectives on Economic Growth and Technological Innovation" through Brookings Institution Press in 1999. He has also contributed chapters to books and articles in academic journals.

During his years in academia, Dr. Scherer was honored to serve as a visiting professor at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and Central European University in Prague, Ludwig Erhard visiting professor at the University of Bayreuth in Germany, lecturer at Princeton University in New Jersey, and as an Arthur Andersen distinguished visitor at the University of Cambridge in England. Locally, Dr. Scherer served on the advisory panel for the U.S. Bureau of Census from 1997 to 2000, the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment from 1989 to 1993, and the National Science Foundation from 1980 to 1983. He is also a former member and president of the Industrial Organization Society, former member and vice president of the American Economic Association, former member and co-organizer of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics, and former member of the American Antitrust Institute.

Completing his undergraduate degree with honors at the University of Michigan, and MBA with high distinction and PhD at Harvard University, Dr. Scherer was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hohenheim in Germany in 1996. He received the Lanchester Prize of the Operations Research Society of America in 1964, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Antitrust Institute in 2002, and in 2014 a Co-Founders Citation from the European Association for Research in Industrial Organization. He received several research grants from the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, and the O'Melveny and Meyers law firm. From 1972 to 1974, he was a senior research fellow of the International Institute of Management in Berlin, Germany, and in 1990 an American Statistical Association research fellow at the U.S. Census Bureau.

Born in Illinois, Dr. Scherer served in the military for two years. Married to Barbara A. Silbermann since 1957 with whon he has three children, Dr. Scherer has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1989, as well as several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the East.
