Bruce A. Finlayson, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Finlayson, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Professor emeritus of chemical engineering at the University of Washington since 2005, Dr. Finlayson taught chemical engineering and applied mathematics for 40 years. He also chaired the department for nearly 9 years and was a Rehnberg professor from 1983 to 2005. Since retiring, there have been numerous lectures named in his honor at the university in recognition of his distinguished career as a chemical engineer who demonstrated exceptional scholarship, teaching, and service in his field.

During his tenure, Dr. Finlayson conducted substantial research on ferrofluids and microfluidics and contributed papers on modeling chemical reactors, polymer flow, microfluidics, ferrofluids, orthogonal collocation, and the finite element method. He also authored several books including, "The Method of Weighted Residuals and Variational Principles" in 1972; "Nonlinear Analysis in Chemical Engineering" in 1980; "Numerical Methods for Problems with Moving Fronts" in 1992; "Introduction to Chemical Engineering Computing" in 2006, 2nd edition, 2012; and "Society Industrial and Applied Mathematics" in 2014. Furthermore, Dr. Finlayson contributed to numerous publications by serving as a member of the editorial board from 1980 to 2007.

Dr. Finlayson is a member, fellow, and former president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, where he also received the prestigious Walker Award for his contributions to chemical engineering literature. He is also a longtime member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Engineering Education, the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Society of Rheology. He has spent time as a member of the board on chemical science and technology for the National Research Council, as a trustee for the Computer Aids to Chemical Engineering Education, and as a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, the Universidad Nacional de Sur in Argentina, Denmark Tekniske Hojskole, and the University College in Wales.

Upon completion of his undergraduate and Master's degrees at Rice University, Dr. Finlayson completed a PhD at the University of Minnesota in 1965. He also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve, active duty, from 1965 to 1967. Married to Patricia Lynn Hills since 1961 with three children, Dr. Finlayson enjoys playing the cello, running, and studying genealogy.
