Joan A. Gillman Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An elementary school teacher for 35 years in New York and northern New Jersey, Ms. Gillman is currently a 5th and 6th grade science teacher at The Calhoun School in New York City. Hired in 2008, the private institution is comprised of small class sizes and faculty with the time and space to craft a personalized approach to every subject matter in order to successfully draw upon students' strengths and nurture growth.

Utilizing a hands-on approach to education, Ms. Gillman has always been known for her energetic teaching ability. In fact, in April 2017, Ms. Gillman received the Uhry/Thomson Award at The Calhoun School's annual faculty tea. Recognized as an individual who demonstrates excellence in the classroom and a commitment to progressive education, Ms. Gillman's dedication and creativity, and involvement in the life of the school, have been monumental. Her efforts since joining the school nearly 10 years ago have included teaching workshops around the country that have showcased her project-based curriculum; one of which was recently included in the National Science Teacher Association's conference, where she had the opportunity to demonstrate her popular Straw Rocket workshop, highlighting astronomy for students. Furthermore, Ms. Gillman is active within the Calhoun Community Orchestra, as well as several student-centered activities. She currently serves on the Pitsco Teacher Advisory Group, and she just completed her second two-year term on the Calhoun Council for faculty.

Ms. Gillman first studied at Felician College, where she graduated with a BA in Education summa cum laude in 1980. She then received an MA in Education at New York University in 1982. A certified K through 8 elementary educator, who is also certified in hearing-impaired education for grades K through 12 in the state of New York, she has taught grades 4 through 6 in the subjects of social studies, language arts, mathematics, and science. Initiating her teaching career in 1982 after earning her Master's degree, Ms. Gillman first taught at Saint Angela Merici School in the Bronx, NY. She further taught for various other schools in Englewood, NJ, New York City, Leonia, NJ, and Paramus, NJ.

In 2016, Ms. Gillman served as a member of the Pitsco Teacher Advisory Group in New York City. She is a former ambassador of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission Program, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has taught at various conferences, and gave workshops at the National Science Teachers Association STEM Conferences. A longtime member of the Science Teachers Association of New York State, Inc., the National Science Teachers Association, and Kappa Delta Pi, she was selected in 2017 as a subject area representative for the elementary section of the Science Teachers Association for New York, where she is responsible for teaching workshops at various science conferences. Furthermore, she is the author of "Straw Rockets Are out of This World" published in 2016, and has contributed articles for science periodicals over the years.

Ms. Gillman enjoys playing classical piano and the violin. In 2013, she joined the Bergan Philharmonic Orchestra, where she has played at venues including the Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Teaneck, NJ. She is also a violinist with the North Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and the August Symphony Orchestra in Westfield, NJ.

Selected to receive a Young Teacher's Incentive Award when she was teaching at The Professional Children's School in New York City, Ms. Gillman has also been cited in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education,, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in American Universities in 1980.
