Registered professional engineer and president of Geoscience Services, Dr. Fischer has spent the last 38 years representing the Clinton, NJ, based consulting firm. His background has contributed to his successes in the field, which includes having worked as a construction engineer for E.I. Dupont de Numours & Company in the mid 1950s, as party chief for Van DeMark & Lynch in 1954, and as partner of Dames & Moore from 1954 to 1979. Dr. Fischer has also been known as a longtime geologist for the Township of Clinton, NJ, since 1989.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Fischer taught as an adjunct professor of graduate level coursework at Cornell University in 1978, and at Syracuse University in 1976; has lectured numerous times in his field of expertise; and has contributed over 150 articles to professional journals and proceedings.
As part of the organizing committee for the 13th, 14th, and 15th multidisciplinary conferences on sinkholes and the engineering and environmental impacts of karst, Dr. Fischer was active as a member of the limestone committee for the New Jersey Resource and Development Council until it was dissolved and currently is a member of the New Jersey State Geological & Water Supply Map Committee. He is a fellow of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Geological Society of America, the International Society of Rock Mechanics, and the New York Academy of Sciences.
Born in New York, Dr. Fischer earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1953. The recipient of an honorary PhD in Engineering Seismology from The Universidad of Centroamericana in El Salvador in 1978, Dr. Fischer recently received a Highway Symposium Medallion Award in 2007. He also received a Service Award by the Arbitration Association in 1967. Having been cited in the 27th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Dr. Fischer is married to the former Pamela Johnston, and has two children: Joseph J. Fischer and Christine E. Wadleigh from a previous marriage. He loves watching sports and collecting art. He was formerly active in sports from college through the New Jersey Senior Olympics.
