Sungkyu Lee, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Lee has been a professor in the Department of International Trade at Andong National University for the past seven years.

As pure economic researcher, academic journal editor, NGO activist and educational entrepreneur, Dr. Lee has been a professor in the Department of International Trade at Andong National University for the past seven years. He previously taught at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul Women's University, Sungshin University, Myongji University, Kookmin University, and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan, all in the department of economics. He was a president of the Korea Public Choice Society in 2015 and is one of vice-presidents of the Korea Institution and Economics Association since 2015. He also spent a year as a researcher for the Korea Institute of Public Finance in 1993. He established the Korea Center for Public Choice Study in 2013 affiliated at Andong National University in 2011 to develop the public choice study, and serves as its director. He was a research fellow for NGO Group for the Korean Taxpayers' Association in 2005-2006, and was also a director of policy committee for NGO Group on Korean Taxpayers Alliance for Tax Accountability 2013-2014. He was a former research fellow in the policy development department of Youido Institute under the Grand National Party in 2005. He was a fiscal policy analyst at the National Assembly Budget Office from 2007 to 2009. He serves as a foreign PhD supervisor to L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan, since 2012. In particular, he recently creates "Mancur Olson Institute", or economic institute for the rise and fall of nations, in order to study 'why some nations are rich, while others are poor?'.

Aside from teaching and academic activities, Dr. Lee has written and published extensively. He has written several books, such as Essays on Voting, Tax Policy and Campaigning (in English) in 2009, Political Economy of Tax Policy and International Taxation (in English) in 2008, Political Economics of Trade Policy (in Korean) in 2010, Public Choice (in Korean) in 2012, and International Trade Theory (in Korean) in 2013. Moreover, he most recently authored "A Tale of Two Markets and the Role of Prosperous Market-Augmenting Governments" in Review of Economics & Finance in 2016, "Argument for Constituency Representation in an Electoral Apportionment" in Legislation and Policy Studies in 2017, and "An Empirical Evaluation of Apportionment in the 20th National Assembly Election of Korea" in Journal of Parliamentary Research in 2016, as well as dozens of other articles dating back to 2007. He is currently the managing editor of the Korean Journal of Public Choice since 2015, issued by the Korea Public Choice Society, editor of the Korean Journal of Public Choice Economics since 2013, published through the Korea Center for Public Choice Study, and chief editor of the Review of Institution and Economics since 2012 in association with the Korea Institution and Economics Association. In recognition of one of his papers, Dr. Lee received a Grand Prize for Free Market Economy from the Federation of Korea Industry in 2011.

In addition, he translated several famous economics books into Korean. Some of his translated books were awarded as 'Excellent Scholarly Book' by the authorities concerned for the past 4 years. Finally, Dr. Lee has been attempting various innovative activities to demonstrate his educational entrepreneurship in the university: he has been initiated a campaign for "Thanks-Diary-Writing" and a campaign for finding "One Word for Life" for university students so as to help them find their vision and value in their life.

Dr. Lee holds a BA, magna cum laude, from Andong National University earned in 1984, an MA from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies earned in 1986, and a PhD from the University of Southampton earned in 2004. Dr. Lee is married to Meehae Woo, a nurse, and has no children. His motto is "Hard work is the order of the day".
