Edward A. Fox, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU or Virginia Tech) in the Department of Computer Science (and by courtesy, Electrical and Computer Engineering) and director of the Digital Library Research Laboratory, Dr. Fox has been a faculty member since 1983. During his tenure, he has taught courses that have included Information Storage and Retrieval; Digital Libraries; Multimedia, Hypertext, and Information Access; Natural Language Processing; Introduction to Artificial Intelligence; and Introduction to Networked Information.

Dr. Fox is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is Founder, Executive Director, and Chairman of the Board of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. He previously worked as a data processing instructor at Florence Darlington Technical College, data processing manager with the Vulcraft Division of NUCOR Corporation, graduate assistant and instructor at Cornell University, and as manager of information systems at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria. In the 1980s, he was a project director for the Virginia Disc series of CD-ROMs and for VPI&SU work on interactive digital video. Dr. Fox also was a member of multiple boards and advisory committees, including Computer Research Association, EU's DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries, UK's JISC Advisory Group for Programmes on Digital Repositories and on Digital Asset Management and Preservation, Chemical Abstracts Service, and OCLC Research.

Receiving many grants during his career from organizations including the National Science Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Justice, IBM, and the U.S. Department of Education, Dr. Fox's research and expertise in the field have become influential worldwide. He has been a co-principal investigator on over 123 research and development projects, has published 18 books and over 128 journal/magazine articles, has taught more than 82 tutorials in over 28 countries, has given more than 65 keynote, international, and invited/distinguished speaker presentations and more than 218 refereed conference/workshop papers, as well as over 460 additional presentations. Dr. Fox has also held many positions for organizations including ACM and IEEE, and has served on numerous editorial boards for professional journals including PeerJ Computer Science, the International Journal on Digital Libraries, the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems, and the Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia. He has received dozens of awards for his work, including six Recognition of Service Awards by the ACM from 1991 to 2012.

Dr. Fox holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MS in Computer Science from Cornell University, and a PhD in Computer Science with a minor in Linguistics from Cornell University. Included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Media and Communication, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America, Dr. Fox is married and has four sons as well as four grandchildren.
