Dr. Annabel Stephens Celebrates Nearly 50 Years of Professional Excellence

In 2016 Dr. Stephens received the Distinguished Service in Library Education Award from Beta Phi Mu, the International Honor Society for Library and Information Studies



Dr. Stephens has taught as an adjunct professor for the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama since 2007.

    NORTHPORT, AL, January 17, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Annabel Stephens has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With nearly 50 years of industry experience to her credit, Dr. Stephens has taught as an adjunct professor for the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama since 2007. Dr. Stephens started her career as a librarian for Alabama's Muscle Shoals Regional Library. From there, she obtained the role of branch head for the Memphis Public Library, before joining Mississippi's Jennie Stephens Smith Public Library as the director and then the University of Alabama as an assistant professor, becoming an associate professor in 1995.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Stephens pursued an education at the Mississippi University for Women, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. She followed this opportunity with a Master of Library Science from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in 1970. Dr. Stephens concluded her studies in 1988, graduating from Columbia University with a Doctor of Library Science.

Beyond her efforts within the field, Dr. Stephens has contributed to several endeavors outside of her professional circles. In 2006, she served as the planning consultant for the Homewood Public Library, which she followed with the same role at Gardendale Public Library one year later. She has also volunteered with multiple organizations, including the University Presbyterian Church Food Pantry since 2002, the Hospice of West Alabama since 2009, and the Turning Point Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services since 2012. Additionally, Dr. Stephens has maintained involvement on the Board of Directors for West Alabama AIDS Outreach since 2003.

In addition to her primary trade, Dr. Stephens remains affiliated with various organizations regarding her areas of expertise. A lifetime member of the American Library Association, she has held active membership with the Reference and User Service Association, the Public Library Association, ALISE, and the Alabama Library Association. She has also found much success with written work as well, serving as author of such books as "Public Library Collection Development in the Information Age" in 1998, and "Assessing the Public Library Planning Process" in 1995. Furthermore, Dr. Stephens has contributed many articles to esteemed professional journals.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Stephens has accrued numerous accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She has been celebrated myriad times by the Alabama Library Association, including a Humanitarian Award in 2002, and both the Eminent Librarian Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. She has also earned the Steven L. Mann Award from the Mystic Krew of Druids, the Ruth Blackburn Community Service Award in 2004, the Librarian of the Year Award by the Alabama Chapter of Beta Phi Mu in 2004, and the Knox Hagood Award from the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama in 2007.

An inductee into the College of Communication and Information Sciences Hall of Fame in 2015 and recipient of the Distinguished Service in Library Education Award from Beta Phi Mu in 2016, Dr. Stephens has also been honored as an Industry Expert, Lifetime Achiever, and Humanitarian from Worldwide Branding. Looking toward the future, Dr. Stephens aims to cement her legacy as an influential and respected figure at the University of Alabama while passing on her expertise to a new generation of professionals in her field.
