Dr. Hough is an esteemed emeritus professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), as well as a widely recognized and highly respected member of the academic community. Having joined the faculty of the UAMS College of Medicine in 1980, as a professor and vice chair of the department of pathology, he has been integral in developing several key initiatives for the department for more than three decades.

In 1966, Dr. Hough received a Bachelor's degree from Hendrix College, where he later in his career raised funds for an endowment in the department of chemistry. This endowment helped to elevate the department to a national status and earn recognition by the American Chemical Society. In May 2016, the College awarded Dr. Hough a Doctorate in Science, DSc. (hon). He received a medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1970, and then completed an internship and residency in the department of pathology at Vanderbilt University Hospital before serving as an associate professor.

At the UAMS College of Medicine, Dr. Hough was chair of the department of pathology from 1981 to 2002, and expanded its faculty through his development of the pathology residency program. During this time he was also chief of staff of the UAMS Medical Center and president of the Arkansas Academy of Pathology in Little Rock, AR. He has served in a number of leadership roles for UAMS, including associate dean of translational research and special assistant to the chancellor, and became a Distinguished Professor in 2004. In recognition of his career achievements and record of service to the UAMS community, Dr. Hough was the first faculty member to receive the honored title of University Professor in 2015.

Dr. Hough has served as a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners' pathology test committee and Pathology Residency Review Committee, as well as a member of the Arkansas Medical Society committee on disaster response. He is also a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and a member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of University Professors, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology. He is a co-author of "Tumors of the Adrenal Gland" published in 1987, and a consistent contributor to the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. He had served on the editorial boards of four major journals in pathology. Among a bevy of other honors and awards, he has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
