An accomplished listee, Dr. Barrett celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Studying the sciences in college, Dr. Barrett already had several years of experience in the field working as a guide, packer, and wrangler for the Kings Canyon National Park, as a research assistant for the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries in Alaska and the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge, in Montana, and as a conservation technician for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. Completing a BS in Game Management soon thereafter at Humboldt State University in 1965, Dr. Barrett then completed an MS in Wildlife Management at the University of Michigan and began working in the department of zoology as a teaching assistant and then research ecologist at the University of California.

Never straying from academia, Dr. Barrett continued to reach enormous goals year after year at the university. Earning the opportunity to teach in the school of forestry and conservation, the department of forestry and resource management, and the department of environmental science, policy, and management for close to 40 years, he also earned a PhD in Zoology on campus in 1971. Named Goertz distinguished professor of wildlife management in 2003, he later became a professor emeritus of wildlife management in 2014.

During Dr. Barrett's tenure in higher education, he spent several years as a research scientist for the division of wildlife research, CSIRO, in Darwin, Australia, early in his career in the 1970s. He was also on the board of directors for many years for the Orinda Historical Society, the Friends of Orinda Creeks, the Friends of Wagner Ranch Nature Area, the Regional Parks Association, the Golden Gate Chapter Safari Club International, and the CalFauna Foundation.

Becoming a certified wildlife biologist by The Wildlife Society in 1979, and a certified senior ecologist by The Ecological Society of America in 1993, Dr. Barrett later co-authored "Wildlife 2001: Populations" in 1992, "Handbook of Census Methods for Birds and Mammals" in 1981, "Symposium on Ecology and Management of Barbary Sheep" in 1980, "Sitka Deer Symposium" in 1979, "Report on the Use of Fire in National Parks and Reserves" in 1977, and "Research and Management of Wild Hog Populations, Proceedings of a Symposium" in 1977. He also authored and co-authored close to 200 articles in peer reviewed journals.

The recipient of numerous awards for his work, Dr. Barrett most recently earned a William Penn Mott Jr. Environmental Award in 2008. He also received a wildlife research grant earlier on from the Union Foundation and has been cited in countless editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Married to Katharine Lawrence Ditmars since 1967, with two children, Dr. Barrett enjoys everything outdoors, including hunting, fishing, camping, and backpacking. He also loves to travel and take photography.
