Rod Mullen Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Mullen is the co-founder (with his wife, Naya Arbiter), president and chief executive officer of the Amity Foundation, where he has served for more than 20 years. There, he provides families with help in dealing with problems related to drug abuse, trauma, racism, poverty and marginalization. He also previously served Amity, Inc. as the executive director from 1984 to 1995, and as the director of Resources and Development from 1982 to 1984. He began his career at the Synanon Foundation, serving in numerous executive positions. Mr. Mullen believes strongly in the healing power of community, and has spent his entire career working on strengthening and evolving the well documented and researched therapeutic community methodology.

Mr. Mullen served as president of California Therapeutic Communities, an advocacy organization, from 2004 to 2006. He was the treasurer of Therapeutic Communities of America in 2002 to 2004. He also acted on the advisory board and as a consultant with the Offender Substance Abuse Report, the Center for Therapeutic Community Research at the National Development and Research Institutes in New York City and with the California Office for Criminal Justice Planning. He was also a member of the National Advisory Committee of Substance Abuse Prevention from 1990 to 1996, and acted as principal investigator at the National Institute on Drug Abuse from 1990 to 1993.

Mr. Mullen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California in 1966, where he was active in the civil rights and anti-war movements. He was arrested in the Free Speech demonstrations held at the University in 1964. He also completed coursework at the University of Idaho and the University of Maryland. He spent a year at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1968, working with renowned photographer John Collier, Jr. He is an active member of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities. Mr. Mullen is recognized for his work in the development of in-prison therapeutic community programs for addicted offenders and violent offenders. These programs demonstrated significant reductions in recidivism to drug abuse, violence and other criminal activities. He also worked to implement a comprehensive, holistic curriculum for therapeutic communities developed by Naya Arbiter. He has also worked with a team at Amity to adapt mindfulness-based cognitive therapies in residential treatment programs.

Mr. Mullen is an avid photographer and has had exhibits in local galleries in Tucson, and a permanent exhibit at St. Mary's Hospital. In videography, he is the director and videographer of "Native Voices from Amity," produced in 2013, "Tell Me About It," produced in 2008, "Improving TC Encounter Groups" produced in 2006, "History of Therapeutic Communities in Corrections," produced in 2006, "Essential Elements of the Therapeutic Community," produced in 2005, "TC Pioneers," produced in 2003, and "Prodigal Daughters," produced in 2002. He has been a frequent featured speaker at national and international conferences, has contributed chapters to books, and articles in professional journals. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to substance abuse therapy and prevention, he has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World. In addition to his career success, he also celebrates 40 years of marriage to his wife, Naya Arbiter. He has three children from a previous marriage, and one, Angelo with Naya.
