Susan J.M. Bauman Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Focusing on alternative dispute resolution, Ms. Bauman provides mediation and arbitration in the areas of business, discrimination, elder, personal injury, public policy, sexual harassment, whistleblower, workplace and wrongful termination. For the past six years, she has maintained a private practice that provides representation in the areas of employment, labor law, personal injury and property damage.

Prior to pursuing a career in law, Ms. Bauman received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965, Master of Science from the University of Chicago in 1966, and teaching certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1970. She taught eighth grade mathematics for eight years before attending law school, where she completed a Master of Science in Industrial and labor Relations and Doctor of Jurisprudence through the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981. Since completing formal education, Ms. Bauman has been admitted to practice in Wisconsin, as well as before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

While maintaining a private legal practice for 16 years, Ms. Bauman gained significant experience in the fields of employment and labor law. During this time, she also served as a member of the City of Madison Common Council, which led to her involvement with numerous commissions and boards, including the Affirmative Action Commission, Equal Opportunities Commission, Board of Estimates, Board of Public Health, Community Action Coalition and Human Resources Committee. In addition, Ms. Bauman was credited with authoring the city's rent abatement ordinance.

Outside of her career as an attorney, Ms. Bauman is recognized as a former mayor of the City of Madison. From 1997 to 2003, she served as the chief operating officer of a city with a population of more than 200,000 people. Together with the Common Council, Ms. Bauman established policies for the city in all areas affecting city life. She also prepared an annual budget for consideration and adoption by the Common Council. Her other duties included appointing members to the numerous city committees and commissions that advise the mayor and council, and meeting with and considering the concerns of local residents. In this position, Ms. Bauman aimed to make Madison the best place possible to live, learn, work and play.

In 2003, Ms. Bauman was appointed by the governor of Wisconsin to serve as a commissioner of the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, where she served as a mediator and arbitrator, and as part of a three-member appellate review board. During this time, she successfully mediated almost 300 collective bargaining agreements and more than 60 grievances in both public and private sectors. Since leaving the commission in 2011, Ms. Bauman has maintained a private practice as a mediator and arbitrator.

In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in the field of law, Ms. Bauman serves as a member of the board of directors with the labor and employment section of the State Bar of Wisconsin. She was previously recognized as a member of the executive board with the Association of Labor Relations Agencies, member of the advisory board with the United States Conference of Mayors, and member of the executive committee with the Alliance of Cities. Ms. Bauman maintains involvement with numerous industry organizations, including the American Arbitration Association and Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

In recognition of her contributions to the field of law, Ms. Bauman has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
